44 years this evening, at the second Acid Test, The Greatest Rock'N'Roll Band In The History Of The Universe debuted their new name, and demonstrated for the first of several thousand times that there is, was, and will be nothing like a Grateful Dead concert.

Thanks, Peter.  I just finished reading The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test  It's mind-blowing how events all fell together over 40 years ago that started paving the road that, among other things,  led straight to the establishment of Alembic.

Bill I just finished that too...weird!  Kesey and La Honda sound like a delightfully insane time to experience.  Ah...

I remember playing a  New Years Eve  gig in a place in La Honda . Some of the original Merry Pranksters were at the Venue and invited the whole band over to the Kesey house after the gig.
   
 Ken  Kesey was in Oregon at the time so I did not get to meet him  but I took lots of pictures of our gathering. It was a memorable experience!

I read it for the first time last year - great book. Time to read it again methinks.
 
I'm open to reading suggestions along the same lines.

Years and years ago, I bought episodes of the original footage from Kesey himself.  I think his son Zane still sells them.  Mine is a cool hand painted and signed VHS copy.  I was surprised how closely the footage follows Wolf's story.
 
Babbs, Kesey, Mountain Girl, George and a few others do an intro to it, that I found hilarious.    
 
As far as suggested 'furthur' reading, Sometimes A Great Notion (Kesey) and Man In Full (Wolf) are my two favorite books, but have nothing to do with the Pranksters, so I dunno if that is of any interest....

Hi phylo. That VHS copy of yours has a limited life before it will start to degrade . I sincerely suggest that it gets transferred to archival quality DVD format to preserve this treasure ; for your own personal use of course. Perhaps it would be prudent to check with the Kesey Family to respect any copyright concerns.

I always thought that On The Road (Jack Kerouac) was a good one to read prior to Electric Kool Aid Acid Test. It's the continuing adventures of Neal Cassady...
