Title: Listening anew - YesSongs/Chris Squire

Man, I somehow wandered back into some of my prog-rock playlists and just wanted to chirp about the absolutely great bass (and other) playing on this album.
 
I know prog-rock all-too-frequently wanders into soul-less noddling but this album does not, IMO. Very visceral, and even funky (well, for English intellectuals) at points. At the point this was recorded, they were very much pioneers, and it sounds like it.
 
I think this album is in my essential canon of bass recordings.

It does the heart good to revisit prog. In metal it has had some resurgence and guitarists are soloing again.

Can't disagree with the sentiment. I first saw Yes in 1974 (around the same era as yessongs) and I've been a fan ever since. I was one of the few people at my school that didn't jump on the Punk bandwagon, preferring to listen to 'Musicians' instead. Danno - I'm assuming you're familiar with Dream Theater but if not, you will love their music, Progmetal indeed ;-)

Danno - Along with Graeme, I too think Dream Theater is great. I also highly recommend Porcupine Tree. those guys are just sick and in my humble opinion the best prog. group around today.

I just watched two videos from Porcupine Tree's DVD; Blackest Eye and Arriving Somewhere.  Very nice!  I really like what they are doing.

I have them all gentlemen! Along with the DT dvds, met the boys at Namm, saw them live for all 3 keyboardists and own a MM JP 7 str guitar. Also check out Transatlantic, Spock's Beard and the endless list of threads that one can lead to! Crimson, UK, Gong, Tull, Curved Air, Van DeGraff Generator, PFM, National Health, Matching Mole, Renaissance, The Family, The Nice and don't get me started on all the fusion cats.  
Jacko, its funny the singer in my band is a well known punk drummer and he embraced all that was punk. I still don't really get it but we do get along quite well. I just don't agree on the abilities of the guitarist in Black Flag. I was all Rush, Yes, ELP Aerosmith, Zep, Zappa,  Kiss, Nugent, Angel, Moody Blues, GG, etc. ad then got into fusion. Oh the turntables I wore out learning riffs! Of course now my brain won't cooperate as much. But I still love it so. Music, music, I hear music, over my head.
