Title: Phantom power check on a Sony MDM-X4 MKII mini-disc recorder
Post by: pauldo on January 08, 2010, 04:55:03 PM
I have a Sony MDM-X4 MKII mini-disc recorder and wanted to get some condensor mics for it (thinking MXL 990 - anyone use them?).

Anyhow - these require a 48 volt phantom source and there is nothing in the Sony manual pointing towards the unit having a phantom power source - HOWEVER - the tech I spoke with on the phone said that the MKII model of the MDM-X4 had phantom power on it.

I checked all types of pin configurations with a meter and am getting no ac voltage . . . is there a 'secret' way of verifiying phantom voltage through a 3 pin XLR? (the power is ON to the unit during check).

There is no special switch on the Sony for initiating phantom power.

If there turns out to be no power source are there any recommendations on a good dual phantom power source?
