Watch the movie Capitalism - A Love Story. There is a decent possibility WalMart took out a life insurance policy on him and is waiting to collect a check when he dies. They are just another corporation that has done all they could to kill the middle class and keep as many of their employees on food stamps and welfare. May they rot along with our financial leaders (criminals) of this fine country. Sorry, some subjects just get me going instantly.
-
Thomas,
It's taking a Herculean effort for me not to dive headlong into this, but...perhaps you should consider that Alembic is a corporation and that the Wickershams are in fact capitalists...and god bless them for it!

While it is certainly understandable that we as individuals may care deeply about topics such as those introduced in this thread, this thread is pushing the boundaries of what the moderator finds reasonable for our board. And while it is highly understandable that we would feel compassionate and empathy for the worker in this story, this thread quickly moved into politics, which is outside the boundaries suggested by the posting guidelines. Please refrain from continuing this thread in that vein.

On a lighter note, I seriously doubt that Alembic has ever fired someone for cannabis. In fact, I have always imagined #10 being carved in a cloud of smoke back in the day!

Alembic is a family owned business and has nothing to do with the corporations and financial leaders of this country that have done so much damage to us all. If all corporations followed Alembic's example, the middle class would still be intact and we would all be happy geeters smiling on our way to work. I do hate politics and will refrain from going further, but I could not stop that post - and the movie I mentioned is well worth watching.

If the folks at Alembic were hanging out with Owlsley Stanley and the Grateful Dead in a warehouse when they began the company, well then I suspect they were practically sweating LSD (not to accuse anyone of something I've not been guilty of myself). As such, I am guessing a piss test isn't mandatory for employment at Alembic Inc?.
-
Unless, perhaps, failing a piss test is mandatory! hehehehe
Bill, tgo
-
Hey maybe I should apply then!
Seriously though, I've had some friends lose their jobs because of random testing. It seems that insurance companies are the ones who determined that the potential liability of employing a drug user outweighs any considerations regarding their actual performance and employment history. Clearly the content of your piss is more important than the content of your character.

Did you hear the one about the Yellow Dog?
-
Thought about typing a response, but followed Dannos idea of typing than deleting....
All I can say now is, mmmmmmmmmm....shortbread cookies!
-
It sounds to me as if Walmart did him a favor. If his days are numbered, would you want to spend them working at Walmart?
BTW, not political, just sad/funny/sad. Have you ever wasted away the hours at peopleofwalmart.com?
-
peopleofwalmart.com + shortbread cookies + milk + Bong = good times!!
-
Actually, no, I had not wasted away the hours at peopleofwalmart.com. Now I have. That was - interesting. Now I'm going to go shower.....
Peter
-
Oh man! I can't begin to measure the time I've wasted at peopleofwalmart.com. Some really funny stuff there for sure.
-
I can only echo Flax's sentiment.Shame on you Walmart!!.
-
Gregory!! :-) I'm with you! ROFLMAO
It is very sad but until people can look within themselves and make a serious commitment to supporting 'alternative capitalism' Walmart shall reign supreme..... You will never see me there - unless I am in costume!!!!!!! :-D

Out of a large cloud of smoke in a warehouse in san francisco back in 1969.....a hand came down out of it holding a serpant which Gave birth to the idea of Alembic!
-
I used to drive truck for Payless Cashways (building materials); they had me take pee tests every two years when I got my Commerical Driver License physical. I acquiesced. Then they instituted mandatory random testing. I refused to participate in that, citing the 4th Ammendment of the U.S. Constitution. They told me that if they called me I would have to take the test. I told them that if they called me I would quit rather than take the test. STRANGELY, all of the other drivers (approximately 40) got called for tests over the next two years, EXCEPT FOR ME. Then they went out of business. So much for random. So much for mandatory. A small victory.

OK, I'm new to people of walmart, but do they take all these pictures around Halloween, Mardi Gras or Burning Man?
-
Hmm. Now there's a violation of a human right. So surprised that Walmart is involved...wait a minute...

A musical Walmartism, and who knows, there might be an Alembic bass involved.

I hear Commodore Perry moved to China and is now CEO of Walmart? (Sorry for the politics)

If you smoke pot, then bump your knee at work, ahhhhhh if you care about your job..... It is most likely better to limp around for the rest of the day and take a few asprin. Most companies have a drug policy that enables them to fire offenders with ease. They don't want you to report an accident, most people dont get punished for on the job injury; we get punished for reporting an injury. Marijuana card I could use one of those where do I get one? I know most of the wally world employes get 0 benefits so who knows the poor guys motives. I work for Pepsi and if I smoke pot and get hurt they can fire me for violating the drug policy. Most of the time we just get suspended for a few weeks (first offence) but the last guy was out 90 days! If you are dirty you have to weigh your options ahead of time. Most of you guys shop at wally mart, (we have created and fed this monster). Oh yea....If you think capitalism is out of balance check out Food inc. WOW.... we live like kings. Poor animals. We grow chickens like watermelons!

Allow me to recommend reading Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickle and Dimed and watching the Documentary WalMart: The High Cost Of Low Prices. As to actually saving money there, I'll just say that when our local grocery raised the price on a 20# bag of dogfood to $18, my wife insisted on buying at MallWart. She was crowing about the 98? she saved - until I pointed out that the bag was 17.5#. They're sneaky, as well as evil.

Brian and Peter - you guys are like Siskel and Ebert - two thumbs up.
Both of those DVD's should be required viewing for every US citizen (especially students who are inheriting our mess). King Corn is another good one.
