i've been looking at these a lot lately and wouldn't mind having one, but i was just wondering if anyone could fill me in on what the controls are and what kind of pickups they use because they are very odd looking

It might be worth an e-mail to Brian at The Low End

He's had a couple in the past and might be able to help.

forum member Todd Harris has a couple of VC's... hopefully he'll chime in....

I love their aesthetics, and will own one of their guitars as soon as I get around to winning the lottery. I've also always been curious regarding the electronics.

I love Steve Swallow's Citron bass, but that's probably not what you have in mind. His has EMG electronics and pickups.
-
The one I owned way back when had passive electronics in a Volume/Volume/Tone/Tone configuration. As I recall they wrapped their own pickups at the time but my memory is fuzzy in that regard.

This is a cool old bass. The pickups are V-C customs, not like anything else out there. The electronics are not unusual - two volumes, two tones, pickup selector. This bass doesn't have the orignal knobs which were really cool brass knobs that looked like the ball on a barbershop pole. The woodwork on these old instruments is fantastic. Joe Veillette's current stuff isn't quite as flashy as these old ones, but absolutely super too. This one is bolt-on, but since Joe doesn't do anything the easy way, it has only one bolt!
