Dates not yet confirmed...

I'd like to see that!
-
I just checked out one of their video's on you tube and noticed a very different version of a Series bass that he was using on the sun goes down video. If you check at time 2:13
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TryRvFOA7r4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TryRvFOA7r4)
It's got a sharp pointy headstock and also a non standard alembic bridge. looks kind of fender style.
i wonder if that was one of the alembics he bought second hand before he got the basses that alembic made for him. The pickups also look very large.

Jazzy, that is not an Alembic. It's an Ashley Pangborn. MK used it for a short time in the Hey Days.
Design clearly borrowed from Alembic.
Here is another one on Basschat:

In this live video there's one of the rare appearance of that bass.

Same bass, different top

yeah I can see from your links, it looks more like a merger between an alembic and Jaydee styling but none of the sound.

Exactly !
-
He still looks pretty happy about it in that picture!
-
This is awesome news. Hope they come to Philly. On a side note, seeing the Sun Goes Down clip makes me think Mark King must have been an influence on Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords.

You mean this?

As a L42 fan, Mark used Jaydee along with the Ashley Pangborn which are very Alembic influenced, the Ashley also makes an appearance in the video for 'Lessons in Love'
Mark began using Alembics when they were supporting Steve Winwood in San Franscisco and a rep for Alembic came up to him and asked if they could build him a bass..this was in 1987.
He moved on from them after L42 disbanded in 1994 using a variety of basses including Fender J basses and finally going back to Status which he uses now.
He still has the Alembics..on a histroical note, his basses were the first to have the hyperbright LED's installed.
The two SII's he has are coco bolo and a really nice quilted maple along with some medium scale SI's
-
Having trouble finding the clip I'm thinking of, but squint your ears a bit when you listen to this one.

Terry, thanks for the historical notes and whereabouts of Mark's basses. Cool!
-
He's playing one of his Alembics in this clip. What a fantastic sound!

Considering Mark is known for having a very bright sound, that Pangborn sounds remarkably dull in tone

Mark King's remaining Series IIs (sorry for the poor quality)

Was looking at the L42 vids on YouTube, the vid of Hot Water was done at a show called 'The Tube' back in 1984 at Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK..I know as I was in the audience somewhere.
-
enzo..nice pics how did you come about them..did anyone notice that PU selector is not at the lower horn as it should be??
This is because Mark requested it be moved to the rest of the control section as when he does his 'thumb strumming' he was catching his hand on it.
-
Terry, this pics come from an article on a Guitar and Bass magazine ( Nov 06 ) about MK private collection. Very nice pics of all his basses.
-
A family pic:

....and the 2 remaining JDs:

I own an exact replica of the left one that mounts the pick-ups that were originally fitted on Mark JD, in the early '80. A trade mark sound!
-
And i bet thats not even half of his collection!
-
I know he had to sell a few when he got divorced about 16 years ago.
he lived at Wooton Manor on the Isle of Wight where he had his own 64 track studio where 'Guaranteed' was recorded.
He has downsized to more modest house.
-
...still living on the Isle now...i met a group of English fans a few years ago at a Level 42 concert , they told me where he was actually living but i forgot the name of the town ...
Alain
-
It is either Cowes or Ryde on the Isle of Wight

San Francisco huh? Maybe a good chance to visit Santa Rosa? ;)
-
Hey Terry, Unless Level 42 played the Tube more than once I was in the same audience as you. I've no idea who else was on the bill as I only went to see MK and at that point in my life I don't think I was too aware of what was going on around me ;-)
Graeme
-
They played The Tube twice as I remember.Once after 'True Colours' performing 'The Chant Has Begun' and 'Hot Water'.The second time was after 'World Machine' performing 'Something About You' and 'A Physical Presence'.
Simon.
-
I was at the first one with jacko in the audience somewhere.
6 degrees of separation!!!!

New date: Las Vegas Aug 1 @ The Crown Theater, Rio Hotel & Casino.

Thanks to a dear friend I'm on the list for the Nokia in NYC. I never saw them live but I needed to amend that error. Needless to say, grateful does not even come close.
