Is there software (freeware?) out there that anyone is using for editing MP3 files?
Good points/ bad points?
TIA
I am borrowing a friends H2 recorder to record a show I am playing tonight and it appears that it will just be one giant mp3,,, I would like to be able to break it down into individual songs.

Not free, but a great simple tool for such editing: GoldWave (http://www.goldwave.com). I think there's an evaluation period that will allow you to cut up files without buying the software. It's not expensive though.

Paul:
The H2 is capable of recording in wav format. I always record in wav format, CD quality - 16bit/44.1kHz, with mine. You can even set it to record at 24bit/96kHz in wav, better than CD quality. At CD quality, it will record approximately 1.5 hours on a 1 GB card in stereo mode. The bigger the card, the more recording time.

I use Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). It's free, and it's straight forward. I use it for the same type of thing you're describing; taking the recordings from my H4, breaking them up into pieces, adding fade-outs, taking out the noise right before the song starts, etc.

Like Dave I use Audacity to chop my H2 recordings into songs. It's a bit of a faff but simple enough to use, allowing you to zoom in to individual notes.

Thirded on Audacity, though when i started using macs i switched to garage band.

I've got Audacity, but I prefer Peak Express 6. The interface seems a little easier for me to navigate and transcoding is seamless.

Thanks everyone!
I downloaded Audacity, with the giant file sizes and our old computer it requires some patience (or a glass of bourbon!). The big problem is that I had the gain on the H2 set low so the audio level is low, I added some compression and it helped bring it up while still retaining a decent sound quality.
Next Wednesday I will record us again at a higher gain level then I am going to have to return the H2 - I will miss it, it certainly is a handy little device. . .
