Title: Stanley's latest album
Post by: karl on July 21, 2010, 03:03:17 AM
Haven't seen any mention of SC's latest album, The Stanley Clarke Band, up here yet, so I just thought I'd throw this out there, for anyone who hasn't heard it yet.

It's well worth a listen: lots of Alembic noises going on, and Stanley sounds more fired up than he has for a long time - there's everything you'd expect: blistering lead bass solos, a couple of gorgeous upright Bass Folk Songs, and a great slap bass funk workout (I Wanna Play For You Too).

Added bonuses are the ever-inspiring Hiromi is there on keys with him, and a couple of compositions from the other musicians involved, including Hiromi herself, and Armand Sabal-Lecco, where Stanley, again, perhaps because it's not his material per se, sounds like he's really giving it everything.

Great stuff, anyway. It's certainly inspired me to go back and listen to Stan's back catalogue again, which had been gathering dust in my attic for a while.

K.

I can only recall off the top of my head a few albums of Stanley Clarke that i think every single track on it is a monster.
Live at the Greek
Vertu
Romantic Warrior
Griffith Park Collection.

Of the other albums of his I have there are enough great tracks on them to make me  happy.
I will buy his album when I can get round to HMV to use my record voucher.

I just heard a track of that album called Sonny Rollins with a member of The Manhattan Transfer singing on 90.9, WDCB public radio Jazz station in Glen Ellyn IL (this is why I don't need satellite radio and keeps me sane).

Veering slightly from the music, it's interesting that stanley appears to be using the black SC with the bigsby that was up for auction a couple of years ago. I guess he's happy it didn't sell :-)

Does it have a graphite neck? A couple of the basslines (I am thinking particularly of the  lead melodic riff of Fulani) seem to have that graphite buzz/tone to them?

I love the album, though even I as a bass player have to admit I find the bass occasionally too loud in the mix - but better that than buried!

Guess I had better get on play.com and order this album from my biggest influence.
