Title: World Guitar Show Coming to San Rafael
Post by: lbpesq on July 24, 2010, 09:47:04 AM
The World Guitar Show lands in San Rafael next weekend (July 31-Aug. 1) at the Civic Center.  I'm going to take the plunge and rent a booth this year in an attempt to thin out the herd a bit.  Anyone planning on attending?  Look for 420 Guitars and say hello.  I'll have some cool, interesting, and unusual instruments on display, including an Alembic Employee shopnight Strat.  I may also bring up an Orion Baritone and a Tribute.

Sam ,
I think I have to go to the show on Saturday because of a rehearsal that I will have to be at on Sunday.   I am sure that we will have lots to talk about when we do meet,  because we might have crossed paths at some time in the past . I want to make sure that I get there when it opens on Saturday  so I can check out all of  Bill's  four hundred and twenty guitars before they all get sold  !  Bill are you renting an 18 wheeler for the show ?
WOW !!!!

Hey, Wolf
I'd prefer to go Saturday as well, but I'll be at the San Jose Reptile Show that morning and the East Bay Vintners Alliance wine tasting at Jack London Square in the afternoon.  It's amazing how many events occur at the same time.

Bill, I'll be wearing my Alembic tshirt. Do you own/are you bringing any Alembic basses?

Sam:

To answer your questions, yes and no.  I currently own a fretless Epic 5 which I picked up real cheap on craigslist Atlanta and brought back from some serious neglect and abuse.  It's on indefinite loan to the bass player in my band as I enjoy it a lot more hearing him play it with us than if it just sat there in its case.  I expect he will eventually buy it from me when finances allow, so, alas, all my instruments will have those 6 skinny strings - no bridge cables - lol.

A reptile show?  If you happen to come across a pair of Australian Water Dragons for under $100 each, could you grab them for me?  We had a male (Norbert) who recently went to the great terrarium in the sky after livingnwith us for over 10 years.

Bill,
Australian WD's are the brown/grey ones, as opposed to the green ones/basilisk lizards with the really impressive crests, right? They're both beautiful. I'll keep an eye out and bring you some business cards if I see any breeders of those. On the lizard side of things most of the species at these shows are leopard geckos, crested geckos, panther and veiled chameleon's, etc.

Either way, I'll let you know on Sunday.

I like this place too !       http://www.eastbayvivarium.com/ (http://www.eastbayvivarium.com/)

I buy 100 or more  live  Crickets there every spring and let them go in my backyard. It reminds me of when  The Grateful Dead had their
Blues for Allah Record release party  at the Great American Music Hall . I had the good fortune to have been there. The Crickets all liberated them selves in the Basement where they had a microphone to pick up their chirping for the live mix . The manager told me  months afterward that it took along time  before they all were vacated . i thought it was really hilarious but he was not laughing !

Sam:

You got it right.  The green ones are the Chinese Water Dragons.  The Australians are more adaptable to captivity - the green ones are a little skittish.

Wolf:

I was there in spirit.  I was on the East Coast visiting at the time, but the show was broadcast live.  Escaped crickets yikes!  Even one escaping in the house can drive you crazy!

Well, I'm about ready to start packing up the van and head up to the show.  See y'all there!

Rather lightly attended.  I guess the economy isn't helping.  Wolf (Sonicus) and Sam (Oddmetersam) from the club stopped by to say hi.  I had a blast, sold a couple of guitars, traded one, and, the score of the show, I picked up a 1969 Martin D 20-12. It looked seriously neglected, rusty strings, the pick guard was curling up around the edges.  I bought it, brought it home, cleaned and polished, lemon oil for the rosewood fingerboard, oil for the tuners.  I used my wife's hair dryer to flatten out the pickguard some (it will still need to be replaced).  New strings and HOLY PHOSPHER BRONZE BATMAN! this 12 string is a cannon!  Sounds outstanding.  I was planning to bring it back to the show on Sunday and flip it for a quick profit, but after playing it, my wife and I looked at each other and agreed it sounded too good to sell!  A steal for only $500!

$500?!?! I didn't think deals like that were to be had, especially at guitar shows.

It was about 20 minutes before closing on Saturday and an old guy brought it by the booth.  He was asking $600.  Several other dealers had already passed on it (I talked to a couple of them who said they wanted to grab it, but the day had been so slow and they had made so little that they didn't have the cash).  The curling pickguard looked pretty bad, but hey, it's just a pickguard.  The worse thing was that there is about a 1/2 chunk of wood gouged out on the back of the peghead on one top corner - invisible from the front.  It was filthy, but it looked structurally sound, so I offered $500 and he agreed.  The mahogany back and sides cleaned up very nicely and the top is fine other than a few cosmetic battle scars.  I feel very lucky to have scored it.
