Title: And some Marvin Gaye w/ James Jamerson
Post by: David Houck on December 29, 2007, 06:50:24 PM
Keavin mentioned this tune the other day.  Here's Marvin Gaye doing What's Going On (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9KC7uhMY9s) with James Jamerson on bass.

That is bass heaven.  Jamerson was exactly where it's at.  He defined bass playing *for the song* and with a groove like no one's business.  Awesome.  Thanks for this.

the amazing thing about jamerson is he only used one finger to play all those notes (his index finger).

Thanks for posting that, Dave!  Marvin sounds great as well..

Geddy Lee has been doing the index-finger-only thing also now for quite some time.  A guy I know from high-school days always played that way too, and could totally smoke me on the bass.  Every now and again I get brave and try it, but can't even begin to pull it off with any dignity!  :P  Jamerson makes it look so effortless..
