Hi advice required on which would be the best company to use on freight from the U.S to Aust.

I've had good experience with DHL going the other way when I had some didges sent to me...I'm not sure of the price difference tho'

FedEx was about $150 cheaper when I had a bass shipped to me in NZ. Australia might be a whole different ball game though based on the amount of goods shipped there.

domestically- dhl is the worst. i haqve had numerous packages arrive damaged. fed ex is second due to their poor tracking and handling
i have never had a problem with ups- their tracking is excellent
this aint about saving money. its about who does the best job.

In terms of transportation across the country, I think FedEx is marginally better than UPS. That just gets the package to your vicinity. On the other hand, we've had varying experiences with the local drivers of both companies and the final safe transportation to your door does rely on them. FedEx has been better here, but last time I spoke with Mica, they've had better luck with UPS in their area.
Ten years ago when I was doing a lot of international work, DHL was the most reliable for safe international delivery. Don't know what things are like now.

I have had the opposite as far as FedEx and UPS. UPS has left items on my driveway while it is raining without even trying to ring the door bell (I work from home), had a telescope delivered that was obviously crushed and then got all bent when I wouldn't accept it and had items left on my garbage can lids. This doesn't count the dented and torn boxes I have received. In general when FedEx delivers something the packaging has been in good shape and they always ring the bell. Like Bob says I think a lot has to do with the local office and drivers.
Overall I've had the best results with the US Postal Service. They've always had the best prices and the items seem to make through in the best shape of the three. YMMV

My two cents on the debate.
Fedex is a lower volume carrier than UPS,all 'express' shipments go by air,their ground and home service are moved by contract carriers. So obviously there is less control over the last 2.
Pretty much all domestic carriers within the US use residential release..they can leave package without a signature.
Of course you have to take into account what kind of a day the people who handle your freight are having as far as its condition upon arrival. But most take care to keep things intact.
UPS and Fedex are close on pricing to be compete in the markets. But with fuel pricing as it is their pricing can vary depending on destination.
Overall, its a crap shoot as far as pricing etc is concerned.
After working for both of these companies for more years than I care to admit I'd have to say go for pricing..and make sure everything is packaged properly and fully insured.

Note that FedEx does not insure guitars for more than $500 - this is explicitly in their tariff. Oh sure, they will take your $$ for insurance, but they will not pay out more than their stated limit. Only use FedEx if you have your own separate insurance.

I used to work for FedEx - their prices are outrageous and their insurance regulations (already mentioned by Mica) are ridiculous. Steer clear of them if you send anything more than documents. But now I'm having troubles with UPS and I'm verging on heart attack as I may lose $2000 I borrowed from my family...
There is NO really good shipping company.

It was insured for $2000.00 so I hope it was just not deliverable at the time specified and will arrive soon.

Unfortunately, my experience makes me distrust ANY courier company. I've had my fair share of bad experiences with most of them (luckily, none of them was downright horrid) and heard enough horror stories. Working for one of them didn't help, either ;-)

Well,I used U.P.S.to bring the S2 from Arcata C.A. to Wagga Aust.Great service well packed in a UPS box took about 8 days,cost $1060 AUD

I used to be a hard-core FedEx user. Use UPS? Never! those clumsy, slow swine! But now I will have to forget FedEx. Luckily nothing wrong ever happened shipping a bass anywhere, and I would have been beyond angry if they destroyed an instrument and then would not pay its insured value. I know Mica will know what she is talking about, so they instantly just became unusuable for me in the future. I am planning on having a bass shipped soon, and I guess it will go UPS Next Day. In the wasteland, here, you try to not let your bass sit around for the locals to play with. So I definitely always ship a bass Next Day.

At the moment, I hate UPS. They'd better do something about it soon.
Or maybe it's my fault?... Serves me right for attempting to fulfill my dreams.
I wouldn't be surprised if they found a reason not to refund the insured amount if they don't find the package. It's what they usually do here in Poland.

They have to put a tracer on it Tuesday. If they don't locate it then the claim will be filed. Someone in the destination hub had the weight and dimensions contested. (as I was told by the shipping agent).

Contested? Meaning they questioned them? Oh well. But then they should have informed you about it.
Actually, I think they should refund the shipping costs even if everything ends well. They haven't done their job properly so why pay them?
