Went to the site and ordered the special package that includes the Egypt set, the Winterland shows following the Egypt tour (GREAT shows - I was there), and a T-shirt.

They're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones that do what they do

Post by: pas on October 02, 2008, 06:34:17 AM: If I'm not mistaken, a few of the tracks - Ollin Arageed, Minglewood Blues, Fire on the Mountain and Stagger Lee - from Egypt are included as bonus material on Shakedown Street. I have to say I thought those versions were rather languid...not a lot of energy. Of course, this was near the end of Keith & Donna's run with the Dead.

Has anyone downloaded the 2 Philly shows from November '79? The set lists looked great to me & this was Brent's first year in the band...a very positive thing from my perspective. However I've heard that there were some pitch issues with the download. Any info would be much appreciated.

The T-shirt (which I also bought) is misspelled. I work with people fluent in Arabic, and the word for crew is misspelled into a nonsense word with no meaning. Not a big deal, unless you have Arabic-speaking people reading it and looking at you like you're an illiterate moron, LOL'

FWIW, my first Dead show was on that '79 tour when Brent was new (Nassau Colisseum, Nov. 2). I had friends at the two Nov 5/6 Philly shows from the Road Trips Fall '79/Nov. 5/6 Downloads who bragged about them. It was a decent tour, especially if you're a Brent fan.

Sounded o.k., but not the most inspiring show I've heard. Really looking forward to the Winterland disc (NOT Warfield) from the next month, as I attended these shows and my memory is that they were mucho excellent. I also added the 3 disc Fillmore 1969 set. I dropped the ball when the 10 disc set came out, and I can't rationalize spending $550+ for one on ebay. The discs are coming to the office with me today. I really like the shirt. I can't read Arabic, just looks like a cool design to me. Also, it's a high quality Liquid Blue shirt - no cheapos!

I frequent ethnic Arabic communities for the culinary delights they contain, and I have friends and co-workers alike that happen to be Arabs. If I'm gonna wear something on me that contains a foreign language, I try to make sure it says what it's supposed to and not something derogatory. On top of that, GD Store ain't giving anything away, so they should at least make sure the quality is commensurate with the price. It's hard enough to try not to appear illiterate in English, much less doing the same in Arabic, LOL!

I bought the Fillmore '69 10-disc for the $100 or so it cost back then, which I thought was high, LOL!

FWIW, I much prefer the Dead's '77 run to the '78 vintage myself.

It's supposed to say Pawa Kurinu (Power Clean) but instead it reads Hawa Kurinu - they left off two little marks so it doesn't mean anything. Or the Kanye West song that he did with Daft Punk - in the video Japanese is always appearing and the word ganbare which loosely means break a leg (as in good luck) is misspelled by one character so it reads gasobare which again doesn't mean anything.

But my wife and I say it all the time to mock Kanye West, so maybe you have a point.

The best is when people that don't know Chinese or Japanese get tattoos in Chinese characters. Some guy sued a tattoo place in San Francisco and won because they told him they were going to write one thing but they wrote something totally random, like Shaolin 3rd level 4th grade.

These recent disks (Egypt 78 and the Winterland set) are a bit of a disappointment, though my expectations weren't too high too begin with. They strike me as more like historical documents rather than great shows. After listening to them in the car, I put in a couple of disks from the Winterland 1973 box set and was blown away all over again! Maybe the best part is that Bobby doesn't play any slide on the earlier stuff...

Englishtown, NJ '77 is still near-peak for the Keith and Donna post-Pig era for me.

The dead (Jerry) were always critical of this performance. And in some parts I certainly see why, but alot of it sounds like the kids having a great time, if not the best performance of all time. I will be going back to the Shakedown; as well as the other 'new' stuff for 78.
