Keep an eye out for Hal's FUNK Bass Forum...
in 2011 (With no affiliations nor aspirations... just Bass Players who loves the music.)
It's time to let people speak honestly about the FUNK.

Funksters out of the closet! So to speak...

I wasn't aware that people weren't allowed to speak honestly about any sort of music.

Sometimes it takes a cultural orientation to appreciate Funk music
-
Remember people. Funk is it's own reward!

Especially when the low end is coming out of a 4 x 21, (cone size), speaker cabinet! Not sure who was piped through that monster.
-
@ Mark, I think pauldo was pumping his frankenstein bass through the 4x21.
To stay on topic: I can't funk but I sure like to listen it done well.
-
guilty!
Keavin - is that you (and #12) on all of the Mista Bossmann songs?
-
Funk is good for the soul.
-
Hahaha, after my post above I checked the set list for church services tomorrow and lo and behold Funkadelic's One Nation Under a Groove is slated for the band jam. Anyone have a decent chart they can email to me!? Too funny . . .
-
We all know James Brown... but very few know Bobby Byrd was cardinal Chief Architect and composer to first establish what is known as FUNK, which James Brown adopted, and eventually claimed.
Both Bobby and James worked as equal partners in the early 50's where James charisma and showmanship was the complete element, which strengthened the entire package know as FUNK.
Vicki Byrd (the widow of Bobby Byrd of 37 years) was also a member of the band during birth of FUNK, and she's still alive to speak of these facts. She's no stranger to these discussions, and had been on National/International news stations like CNN and other major news outlets in context to musical history.
It was Bobby who invited James a place to stay when James was a troubled teen. Not long after that, James joined the Avons, (a band Bobby had founded) then the Flames. As they say, the rest is
history.
Bobby Byrd passed away in 2007, his wife and family resides in Georgia.

Question:....How Does larry Graham (Not Have) a signature fender jazz bass when he put the stamp on it in the funk arena, but marcus miller (larry graham clone)has one!............toma hawk01 we need you on this one bro...(http://club.alembic.com/Images/449/84097.jpg)

I thought Larry played Moon Basses (Larry Graham Model)
Vann-Di
-
How about a James Jamerson Signature Fender
or Donald Duck Dunn model ?
-
yep he does play moon basses, but he did just as much for fender than stanley did for alembic.
-
There was a Donald Duck Dunn signature P-Bass from Fender around 1998, but you don't hear much about it. It was a limited edition from Fender Japan (CIJ or Crafted in Japan). I think the Lakland Donald Duck Dunn signature is much more well-known.

The song Janet Jackson performed really sum up just how timeless Sly and Larry's music is...
#12, your question about Fender not having a Larry Graham Signature bass, and yet Marcus Miller and others were given such honors, is a serious mystery, and frankly disgraceful (in my opinion).
Larry Graham is the man, who invented Slapping/Thumpping/Popping using a Fender electric bass, and yet they make a Marcus Miller bass before the Master...? This de-values the signature as a whole.
I am surprised Marcus Miller could even honor his own signature Fender without the company of a Larry Graham signature Fender within the organization.
I am sure Marcus Miller, feels a little aloof without Larry's Fender signature in the mix. I am sure he must think of this in the middle of the night... (He might not bring it up, but I am sure he must wonder or ponder this very question too... for that, would be human).
Fender signatures are confusing:
They honor the branches, but not the deep roots of the tree...

Ultra funk..loads of Mu Tron to the max!!!

Wolf, Fender for a while made a Duck Dunn Signature, but it passed out of the catalog. He now has another red Signature bass made by Lakland.
The reason I've always heard is that there's just too fractured an estate situation regarding a Jamerson bass, surprising inasmuch as his son is a great player on his own.
I don't know if Fender ever approached Larry Graham, but like a lot of cats who other musicians know about but not the general public in the States, he's well known in Japan, leading to his association with Moon.

Thanks for the response and information Joey. I have checked out some Lakland Bass's and in my opinion they had really decent playability. Most recently at the local Texas Amigos guitar show I was finally able to play a Lakland that came equipped with Hammon Engineering Dark Star pickups. It was nice to play but now I am so spoiled now by my Alembics.

It's sad how an American Icon, has to go abroad to get some respect.

Yes, but Hal you must remember how obsessive the Japanese can be about American/Western culture: Think of how into Classical music Japan is, remembering this is half-tone music in a country where their heritage is quarter-tone. Think of all the Alembic-ish basses from the 80's, or the various neo-Fenders now like Moon or the various Deviser brands.
Of course, this hunger for American Pop Culture abroad works to our advantage as well: David Hasselhoff has hit records only in Germany ! !

I feel you Joey, but my references in this regards were directed at American Iconic manufactures like Fender who had never created a Larry Graham Signature bass.
I am still on the question of how does Marcus Miller and others has a signature bass before the early pioneers and bass contributors like Monk Montgomery, and Larry Graham?
Watching Larry Graham in the 70's playing a Fender, made me want to own a Fender -- but my budget could only afford a Fender copy called a PAN bass (made in Japan).
Fender has a rich history, but their present management are treading the line of ignorance, which I would expected more from their leadership.
When they dedicate a signature bass to Larry, or Monk, I'll be the first in line to own them as a relic investment. However, until that time, I'll just say: its a shame...

Monk Montgomery and Larry Graham were certainly trail blazers, and without them, I wonder whether Marcus would be Marcus. That being said, I think we will all agree that the technical prowess of Marcus Miller is just on another level. This sort-of phenomena is not unique to music (and certainly not to bass players). My wife was an athlete in the first generation of competitive Women's Olympic Style Weightlifters. She is in the Weightlifting Hall of Fame and still has all of her American records (the weight classes were re-structured since she retired; therefore, she will have her records in perpetuity). Yet most of today's athletes have no idea who she is or what she did for them (she was on a committee that successfully petitioned the IOC to include women in the Olympic Games). It can be frustrating for the person and their supporters, but I guess it's human nature to ask: what have you done for me lately?.
-
Jimi Said it best:
Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blown in the past
And with his crutch, it's old age, and it's wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries Mary...

i find that Fender is doing very well with current managment, look at the American Deluxes jazzes, they're amazing! i love them to death, real beauties also. give me a couple months and i'll be ordering an all black with maple fretboard 5 string(tuned EADGA, the last A being a guitar string which is something i've been wanting to try for a while)

Well, I guess from your perspective, I'll just have to wait and see if Larry Graham agrees with you Taylor.
