Title: Who get's your Alembic, after you die?
Post by: hendixclarke on January 12, 2008, 02:41:44 PM
I don't expect to split the scene any time soon, but it has often been a question in my mind; of the things I cherish most, my Alembic is of the top 5 relics I hold.

I still have not assigned. What qualities of a person would you honor, in giving your Alembic away as your very last last, rite of passage before entering the next life?

I thought of giving my Alembic to my High Scool Music Department as a Trophy of my respect or giving it to a charity related to music in some way... Any ideas?

the most simply and logic and familiy idea: to my sons. 2 Alembic, 2 sons, one for each.

It's naturally AND normal. My wife hate jazz....
Just the problem of the heavy weight of my MK5...
My son (the older, 19) is 198 cm (feet 6.49606, inches 77.9528) but this instrument is too heavy and big for him, he spoke.

Keavin, that was strong words. I applaud you for saying that...

When a person really starts to take time out and look back an the many blessings and the hard work it took to own something of real quality, and then knowing in the back of your mind, you will need to have your affairs in order and release those earthly things you cherish so much; can be a troubling question for some people.

I never understood the hip hop fad. I knew something was wrong when I first heard Rapper's Delight with Chic's Good Times samplings.

But at the same time, whatever it takes to better yourself from a poverty rich culture and glamorizing it, and getting paid on the hype is what it takes for some people to start other wonderful things. Hey, live and let live... My sins are mine, and their sins are theirs.

No different from a man who invents a cartoon mouse who gets people to spend billions every year.

No real human can exist in this idealized world. In places where music is only a back-drop, nothing can I get from it, for it was never the vision from their creators.

There is no way in hell, would I give my Alembic to anyone who supports music mediocre level.

What more good can I say about Alembic?

I had said enough about its greatness.

I wish Truth, Love, and Peace to everyone and those who offened me, I forgive; and I hope those whom I offened, forgive me.

This is my last post. You guys are wonderful!

I know where one of mine will go.  The Red '91 Essence I used in Baghdad, better known as the Burkha King, will most likely go back to the mothership.  I think it would be a neat thing to display (I'll include pictures to verify it was there) as the first (and hopefully not the last) Alembic in Iraq.

Sorry, Pierre, kind of difficult to forget something I lived through.  The Mothership refers to Alembic in Santa Rosa, CA.

Thank's Alan ... but what mean (I can't translate with Google) mothership ? Literally, in french is: m?re bateau ... why this word for a simple factory ?

Many here have referred to Alembic's factory and headquarters as the Mothership, as it is the only place where Alembics are made.  Hence, it is the mother of all Alembics as they are born there.

Mothership is a term that, within the context of its use in science fiction, essentially means heart of the fleet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothership).  The Mothership is a home for, and provides services to, the other ships in the fleet.  Thus, when we are sending one of our instruments back to the shop, we are sending it to the Mothership for service.  Mothership is also illustrative of the fact that our instruments were born there; and when they return to the shop, they are going home.  And of course some of our members have been fortunate to tour the Mothership.  My guess is that it is an experience not unlike touring Battlestar Galactica.

To me, Mothership brings to mind Stanley Clarke's lyrics:  Hail Space Warriors...We have weapons and vessels, but I choose the sound of the plucked string.; whereupon, Stan the Man rips it up on his -- you guessed it -- Alembic.

Of course, the reference to the Alembic factory in Santa Rosa has a more earthly connotation.  Still, it conjures images of the Magic Hippies practicing their alchemy, turning wood into gold.

My Alembic goes to my friend Jim Hepler, a monstrously good fingerpicker from Edmonton who also plays  bass, but only fretless.  He needs the fretted variety, and I know my SJ would have a good home.

By the way, when I think of Mothership I think of George Clinton and Bootsy Collins.

It definitely should stay with my family/kids,  unless they'd ever decide to part with it for whatever reason.

In that (nevertheless unlikely) case I already promised it to  Trevor Lindsey (http://www.myspace.com/trevorlindsey target=_blank), who I consider the godfather of my bass. He helped me so much in planning all the details and made it possible for me to eventually acquire the bass. I told him it would be his if ever I should pass away, which of course I hope not to happen anywhere soon.

Ive thought about this from time to time.  Im not married, have no kids, and at this point in my life (just turned 40) probably have little interest in starting a family.

I have two nephews, one of whom plays a little guitar, I'll probably leave him my martin or taylor acoustic.

As for my Series I and my SCD, I wouldnt mind leaving them in the care of some music school somewhere, to pass on to a highly gifted student.

Well, I guess my youngest son will get my custom orion and my stepson will get my hot rod jazz bass with the Barts and Audere preamp. Im not trying to slight him but the youngest child in my house cares more for music than the other ones.

Wills; are typically kept private until after we die.

Having said this: my most beloved instruments will go go to specific people and the rest of them including my Alembic will go to whomever in the family is willing to take them.

My wife is a nurse, not a musician.  She can't understand my fascination with (and tendency to accumulate) musical toys.  She once said that, should I predecease, all that junk would be on the curb the following Thursday for the trash man.

So, last time we updated our wills, we added a special paragraph saying that, when I die, all my musical gear goes to our number-three son, the starving musician of the family.  The rationale is that he'll know best what to do with it all.

My eldest gets the Series 1 and my second son gets the Epic 6 if I still own it, and my youngest gets the Skylark if he can play at least 5 real songs.

I had to say something here...

I was 18 years old when I purchased my first Alembic bass.

Looking back to now...

If any kid (I know) wants to own an Alembic bad enough, they got to be good enough...

Kids need to go through what it takes to get value, and anything of value is worth earning for themselves.

Giving something away of value, is a form of cheating someone else's motivations to achieve. This is what create weaker children (in my mind).

It's just like me giving my house to my children. Sure, I would had loved if someone gave me my home, but at the price of my own story around home ownership? I thank GOD, I got it myself!!!!!

If you want something great, do what it takes to earn it and enjoy the memories and stories it took to get it. Giving something of value, robs the beneficiaries of their ownershiphood and legacy.

When I shuffle off this mortal coil any Alembics I own at that time (I have one and desire more) will be shipped back to Santa Rosa.  Sophie and any of her future colleagues will go home, where they belong. Should Alembic wish to resell it, I know it will be in the hands of someone who will appreciate its specialness.

As I've said before, an Alembic is an heirloom, like a Hamburg Steinway or a Strad, Amati or Guarnerius.  I'm entrusted with caring for it, but it belongs to the ages.

This morning I'm thinking that there is a good chance that if someone actually knows what an Alembic is, then there's a good chance they would be worthy of the instrument, even if their skills aren't there yet.  I know my skills still aren't there yet, and I had mine built in 1981.  Someone who knows what they are will seek them out.  Others will avoid them like the plague.  I guess maybe a litmus test might be to let them play with the very-non-standard tone circuitry for a little while, and see if they can get their brain around it or not..

Good morning everybody...

John

I have no children. My brother is the executor of my will and I send him a list of the approx value of my stuff, and detail of what it all is so that he can sell it for it's true value and give it to my nephews to do with as he/they please.
