And too, the World SuperBike season begins this weekend in Phillips Island, Australia. AMA Racing and Daytona Bike Week in 2 weeks.

What a great game! If I recall right England made a fair showing but the home team took it all...

Do true rugby fans find sevens as authentic or is it a poor representation of the sport?

Post by: jacko on March 02, 2011, 01:20:41 AM: John. Sevens is a shortened version of the original 15-a-side rugby union that is played under the 6 nations and originated in Melrose in the Scottish Borders where an annual international tournament (http://www.melrose7s.com/) is still held.
I played union at school and I can tell you it's a brutal sport. The slightly more modern version is rugby league, played in teams of 13 with a limit on the number of tackles (6 I believe) before the ball is turned over to the opposition, I believe the tackles are lighter and the ball is a slighly different shape.

I lived in rugby crazy NZ from 2002-2007 and can tell you that there is huge support for both Rugby Union and Rugby League. Sevens is essentially Rugby Union with all the 'big uglies' taken off the field. It's rugby sped up with the smaller, quicker guys out on the field. I don't know if you follow cricket at all, but it's the equivalent of 20/20 cricket... a way to condense the game in order to make it more exciting, quicker and palatable for people who might find the standard version of the game to be a bit slow and lacking in pizazz.

probably Jonny Wilkinson just now in terms of being well known but my all time great would be someone like jonathon davies, barrie john or Gareth edwards, all of whom are (surprisingly for an englishman) Welsh.

edit: let's not forget the legend that is Jonah Lomu.

Baseball is a kids game here too. We just pay grown men obscene anounts of money to play it. Should the players ever go on strike again just watch how many would offer to pay to take their place!
