What was the name of the band?
-
Fable was the name of the band
-
what kind of music did the band play?
-
Your sister called... she wants her clothes back!!! Actually, I used to dress exactly like that in one of my late 70s early 80s band. Here is a pic of my last serious band:
Lets keep this thread going!!! I know Art has a great pic of himself that everyone would be interested in seeing.

Here's my band from the early 70s: Pentagram

I'm the guy in the stripped djellebra (okay, weird was a selling point).

I'm not that old but I was still kinda weird: 1981 - Assasin

Late 80's Angel Marie Michael Band - she was blind and played like Jeff Healey (guitar on lap) - Dig the spider belt buckle and the 'gold' Italian Horn necklace W.T.F.?!

The famous Dexter Bracket band:

Oh and one more from the early 80's!!! A short while after this I got the second 15" cab for my Traynor stack!

Johnny Quest, early 80's... I am second from left. This pic was shot in a back alley in Niles, CA by the drummers brother, who was a semi pro shooter at the time. Here he has just whipped out of his coat a Mickey Mouse camera, and said Cheese. We all busted up, and he took the pic. Not with the Mickey Mouse camera though!

This is me, at about 23-24 playing my poor mans Alembic,
We were opening for the New Riders..

John, you still have that Steiny (XL2?)? That picture is awesome...
-
Two for the record. First, Steppin' Stones from around '67, (1967, that is) me on the left with the '65 Jazz Bass I still have. I was 2 years old at the time... Second, Morningstar, Kansas City, around 1978. Playing the lead guitarist's '67 P-bass. Note edge of Moog Taurus pedals to left of house right flash pot cloud. Just for fun, a fan has this: www.kcmorningstar.com (http://www.kcmorningstar.com)

1981 - Chicago area. My Peavey t-40 is upside down behind me. (I am on the right)
We wanted to make it looked like a smashed pile of equipment, but actually carefully placed everything to avoid damage/scratches. We were punks, but also gear aficionados too!
-
Thanks Mica!
I love that pic of the Elmo Nails Band!
-
Nice thread! Here is an old picture from our rehearsing room. Should be around 1986. I'm on the left playing my Aria SB-1000 through an Ampeg SVT and a JBL cab.
-
This stuff is just priceless ! I can still smell the old beer and cigarette smoke, hear somebody drunk over there, and see a stage full of Peavey and clear plastic drums and MXR and Morley pedals . . . Time to go back, somebody kill the jukebox !
My favorite 'we're gonna take a break' line: 'Gotta run back to the motel and check the traps!'.
J o e y
-
harald..the guitarist has a lonely wah pedal..how would the modern guitarists of today survive with just one pedal instead of the pedal boards which cover the whole stage!
You lot are very brave showing these pics...mine went in the trash years ago(bad haircuts, bad dress sense and even bad music!!)
-
Maybe not brave, but proud of what we all did to play the music. In my small town in Missouri, in 1967, there were two bands playing full time. I was in the keyboard band, my brother in the 2 guitar band. We rented the Legion hall and each of us took home $100 a night. More than I made when touring a national album release. Heady times indeed. That band from '67 is back together, playing benefits for the local causes. Thanks to all for posting. So very cool. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW2Wpz38vLc&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW2Wpz38vLc&feature=related)

Hi Greg; welcome to the board!
-
Thanks, Dave. I've been lurking on the site for the 4-5 months since I got my first Epic, a 5 string. I've waited 33 years to finally have an Alembic, and just love it. I'll post pics when I get them taken. Great to be part of the family.
-
Hey Greg, I live in Prairie Village now but grew up in southwest Missouri in the '60s. What town were you playing in?
-Jon
-
Jon, we played out of Kansas City. Southwest MO would have been the ranch in Galena, KS. Probably played there 5-6 times a year if not more. Skip and Kenny would fire another band to give us a gig for the week end. What a rocking place. Always packed. Yes, the smell of cigarettes and beer, fighting in the parking lot, and the other 'things' that we did in the mid-late '70s
Later, Hammonds Arena at SW Missouri University.
Any other Alembic owners in the KC area? Sounds like a party to me...
-
Eligilam - It now belongs to my brother. Great instrument in many ways.

Here are a couple from 1992 when I was touring in the USA with a reggae band. Pic 1 is in orlando florida
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/449/95596.jpg)
That guitar was a casio midi guitar controller MG510, and the pickups were pretty noisy when I got on a big stage so during my tour I picked up the strat. Pic 2 is in the bullring in Tijuana where we opened for Santana for two shows.
The second is my trusted Fender Strat Ultra with an ebony board and lace pickups. A wonderful guitar. Me on guitar and Elias on bass. around 1978/79
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/449/95598.jpg)
Cimar (Gibson Marauder Copy) I loved that guitar, it had clear plastic see through pickups and later became the my pickup and wiring and switching explorations.
Last one with my new(at the time) Ibanez SA400WN semi acoustic oh and that was my first car two door Ford Cortina 1300gls
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/449/95600.jpg)
I was a big fan of the Blackbyrds at the time hence the dungarees. Jazzyvee

That's me with my Pan Bass back in 79!
This Fender Jazz copy,
sounded better than the real thing.
I talked much about this bass
on past threads, so when one
of my lady friends had sent
me this picture, I was happily
surprised to show this on
this thread.
The way we were... WOW!
What a trip!
Peace and Love,

The Elmo Nails pic has me smiling everytime I look at this thread. Check the speaker cabinets, it looks like the band is playing AT each other (battle of the band?)
Mike
-
Mike, that was our on-stage monitoring system..
-
jazzyvee..J reg Cortina GLS that would make it 1969 model and looking at the pic I would say around 1974 or 75 whan that pic was took..maybe even 1976.
-
to jon_jackson, went back and re-read your question and my former posts and decided I gave a lame answer. In the 60s, I was playing in Higginsville, 20 miles north of Warrensburg, 50 miles east of Kansas City. WTF geography lesson for most posters, but that's the correct answer. Still very cool to see all the posts. How many thousands of hours of music have been produced by all us bass players? Congrats to all of you.
-
Terry, I think it was a 1971 Cortina and I bought it for my birthday in 1979 and sold it late in 1981. I bought that guitar in 1980 so that kind of dates the picture to between those years. I was still at school during 1974 -1976 and not an ASBO, joyriding, truant teenager posing with a stolen car hahaha.
(for our non UK friends, ASBO = Antisocial behavior order (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Social_Behaviour_Order))
Jazzyvee
-
jazzyvee...looked in good condition for a 79, as an ex Ford mechanic, they rotted from the floor upwards.
I had the GL model which was a Fred Flintstone car..ie holes in the floor pan, I gave it to a mate to weld some plates on it when he worked at British Steel, when it got MoT'ed the examiner said was I planning driving over a minefield..my mate had welded 3/8 steel plate to it and I wondered why it didn't accelerate!!
Those were the days....
-
Yep I had dodgy sills on that one eventually and the heater was always leaking and it was so bad that in winter it blew steam up through the vents which frosted the inside of the glass...!!! Not very good.
Yeah those were the days you could do work easily on your own car. These days I can't even change the 6 spark plugs in my three cylinder smart car because the engine has to be removed to get them out....!!!
Sometimes not everything that is new means progress.
Jazzyvee
-
For reasons I never understood, my parents bought what had to be the only Cortina in the state of Ohio from the estate of a little old lady Latin teacher; I generally walked rather than be seen driving it.
Peter
-
cozmik..they were usually a teenagers first car, that or the Mini.
The engine bays were huge with this tiny engine in, not as jazzyvee says where most modern cars have two bonnets(hoods to you usa guys), the metal one on top and one inside the engine compartment.
Progress mean you cannot touch them which = large garage service bills.

Cool Dave, had you decided on a Major at that time ?
I have a snap shot of me playing one of my Alembic modified Guild Starfies at about 1974 that I need to scan and touchup a bit.
-
You haven't changed a bit dave :-)
Graeme (going into the loft tonight to see if I can find some early pics of my own to post)
-
Wolf; between then and the time I finally graduated, I went through a few changes in major. Thinking back to that particular time, it was an amazing experience, for which I am deeply grateful.

Nice hippy sandwich Rusty!
-
Thanks Pauldo! This picture was at a pop show at our high school. I still have that shirt up in my attic!
-
Nice Mullet in your promo shot rusty. We could have guessed the date without being told ;-)
Graeme
-
I had the mullet before they were called mullets! I survived the disco of the 70's only to succomb to the big hair of the 80's! Here's a better shot. My kids love to make fun of this one!
-
That look's coming back into fashion Rusty. Now here's a look that never went out...
This was the night of Prince Charles' first wedding in 1981. I can't say as I've changed much ;-) The guitarist with the afro is now totally bald.
Graeme
-
Unfortunately (or fortunately!!!), I will never have the mullet again, my next look will be bald too! As soon as my crop circle on top gets a little bigger, I'm shaving it! It works for Tony Levin!
-
And me!!!! LOL
-
I heard on the radio this morning (on the bbc so it must be true) that scientists had developed an anti balding serum from the lining of a pigs bladder. Apparently it's to be injected and forms a protective layer around the follicles while promoting new growth. I think I'd rather go bald ;-)
Graeme
-
I seem to remember that ram's bladders can be used to prevent earthquakes...
Sir Bedevere
-
Bald is beautiful!
-
We can't regret being young someday, but regarding our outfits...
-
......& our hairstyles!
-
From 1980.Good Lord, was I really that young?I'm the long haired freak with the Stones shirt on,top row.I still play in bands with the guy next to me.
-
Sometime in the mid 80's. I can't believe I was ever this thin...
Still have the customised precision.

Dark Star of Davidson - not really from way back, though; just 2 years ago...

For some of us, two years ago is way way back.
-
Well, it's not the whole band, but this is ca. 1993. Both basses are mine, a Ron Guliotta and a David King fretless.
-
For some of us, two years ago is way way back.
Yeah, David. On the other hand, A year passes like nothing, with the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers.
-
Heard a line that probably fits us all- I'm trying to figure out what happened to the 20 years between 1969 and 1975, and the six months between 1976 and 2011!
-
Wideload,
That is PERFECT .... so true.
Rich
-
OK, show of hands - how many of us have played in a band called the Rhythm Kings? Mine's up.
R.
-
Never played with the Rhythm Kings; but I did sit in with the Radio Kings (http://www.amazon.com/Aint-Easy-Radio-Kings/dp/B000003AB8/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpi_3) in the mid 90's when they played a gig in Charlotte and their bass player had to return to Boston.
-
Just came across this and remembered this thread. Maybe 1971? Guild Starfire, I think (with a coiled cord!). Would have been a few years before I learned about Alembic. And it looks like I'm reading music. Ha! I developed my commanding stage presence early on.

A horn band in 1971; covers of Chicago, Ides of March, and BS&T?

You are correct sir. Also some Spirit, Jethro Tull, Ars Nova, and a bunch of original music that sounded a lot like the above. Ha!
Mark, that is a most excellent picture!!

Bonus points if your band played My Sharona.

I'm guessing that was high school and you had a gaggle of groupies for sure.

Bonus points if your band played My Sharona.
My current band still does :-)
Graeme
-
The Knack was a great band!!! The songs were well crafted and always a little dirty: (...And she makes you want to scream, Wishing you could get inside her pants...). HA!!! That guitar solo in My Sharona is insane!!!
-
Yea we did My Sharona. I'm thinking I was playing Let's Go by the cars here. We also had a great female singer so we managed to do some Pat Benatar,Joan Jett, and The Go Go's. Fun Times!
-
Our singer just emailed today that she wants to learn My Sharona!
-
Not that old but 88-89. (http://club.alembic.com/Images/449/108580.jpg)
-
Oh, the eighties and the mullets we had...
ps.: your guitarrist needs a haircut (at his chest)
-
Wow that bass has very narrow string spacing. Did you use fingers or a pick on it?
Jazzyvee
-
Used a pic. The drummer is Lou Gramms nephew and the son of drummer Ben Gramm. Guitarist is very talented and very wealthy. This was before metro sexual body waxing.
-
My First Band. 1977 We called ourselves Pain. Couldn't really play a whole song. But we thought we sounded good. Pre-bass days, I'm In the back with the Ibanez V, age13. Bill is the other guitar player 12 or 13. Brent his brother (drummer) age10 or 11.

Coiled cords . . . . KUSTOM PA cabs . . . . I remember you would rule the world if you had a Shure VocalMaster head and a pair of Altec Voice of the Theaters. Moving the B3 from place to place (groan . . . . ). The band descending on Denny's or IHOP or Waffle House after the gig with tonight's catch . . . . I miss the fun I had in those way simpler times, would give anything if it were still that way.

I hear ya Joey. My current band was preparing to play an outdoor festival here in Knoxville. The money wasn't going to be great, but we have been giving all the money to the members who have lower paying jobs anyway. Then we found out that the PAY was actually the COST of participating in the festival. Let's see... haul all our shit downtown (where there is little to no parking), hang around in the heat of the day waiting for our turn to play, no sound check, hang around the rest of the evening (once you're there you're trapped), get treated like a nuisance by the promoter... and PAY for the privilege??? Nah, I'll stay home and have a beer.
-
OK, I gotta guess, Mike - the guy in the tiger-print tights was the drummer, right?
Peter
-
Guitard player actually
-
I'm happy that in the 80's I was too young for band pictures. :-D
Well, I have too look if I find the picure of my band when we were standing on a heap of grit which looked pretty awkward. At least I have a print of it somewhere...

Today I found a video on youtube from my first USA tour in 1992 with the reggae artiste Pato Banton. The gig is Skippers Smoke house in Tampa Florida
On that tour I was playing a white casio Midi guitar that I replaced for a Fender Strat Ultra on the second leg of the tour which was the west coast of the USA.
I'm on the left hand side of the video and the music starts about 2 mins in which is after the interview with Pato.
