Title: My ears hurt!

Just got home from a nephew's wedding.  I would like to go on record as favoring a law requiring mobile DJs to be trained & licensed before being allowed to use a graphic EQ.  Or hell, train & license soundmen, and outlaw DJs altogether!

I've NEVER liked really loud music.  Because I was a rock musician, people assumed I liked it LOUD and would CRANK it whenever I was around.  Remember what we used to do to our car stereos in the 80's???  Ouch!!!

ditto on the loud music through bad sound systems or by bad sound people.
 
timely post...just yesterday I went on a road trip with a friend who was trying to carry on a conversation while having his car radio so loud you had to shout to hear each other talk.

I played a show last night and the sound man blew chunks! My tinitus was still ringing hard this morning. On the other hand my SII was booming loud, may be I was at fault here.

Is there room on the soap box? I saw Bootsy Collins recently; the show was ludicrously loud. I had earplugs in, and even then it was nearly painful. I know it ain't nuthin' but a party, baby but, REALLY! (It was a GREAT show other than the excess of db's.)

Seriously, the moment you learn a few things about running sound, you'll be forever disappointed.
 
My favorite two things:
 
1) soundman has no hearing above 4KHz, so the treble sounds like an icepick being jammed repeatedly into your ear hole.
2) Put subs at either side of the stage, so you're either inundated with bass, or can't hear it (comb filter-o-rama)
 
Put both of those together, and now you will seek a nice warm bath, and a single edged razor.

I had a hearing test and the results were that I had about 10db loss in the octave between 2.5khz and 5khz. I was told this was typical of a person who had been exposed to loud music and who rides motorcycles. Guess I would make a good soundman... NOT.

Tell that to kids today, using their MP3 players at high volumes, a whole new generation growing up deaf... And playing louder and louder.

Last time I was at a gig where it got too loud was a triple bill in Glasgow a couple of years ago. Joan Jett was perfect, sound level was exactly where it should have been and even though the venue was like an aircraft hanger the levels were pretty even right through the hall. And then came motorhead who got louder for each song (not that surprising I suppose). By the time they were halfway through I'd moved out to the bar - the sound was too much (and I'm not a fan anyway) and was joined by at least a third of the audience. By the time Alice cooper came on my ears had started ringing and I had trouble hearing many of the subtleties of Alice's music Yes - subtleties. There are some incredible songs in the Alice Cooper canon but motorhead spoiled them for me.

p.s. I like loud music. Motorhead are just LOUD - no music involved.
