I just checked out that excellent clip of Jessica.I got to thinking about that moment when all other bass lines and tone would be compared to that one song.For me it was Emminance Front w/the mighty Ox.I'd had never even heard of Alembic back then and was playing a Matao,and a Univox beatle bass.The year was 1982.The next song was actually an album, Paul Simons Graceland.I had hear Jaco by then ,and Mark Egan,as well as Michael Manring(who continues to bewilder me),but something about all those fretless tracks really stuck with me. Its funny how things like that stick with you,because even when I've tried to move away from those sounds/tones,they always sneak back over time.

Before I ever picked up an instrument, and was not particularly attracted to the bass, there were those bass sounds that got to me anyway. I'm thinking of Jack Casady's, Jack Bruce's, and Tiran Porter's; they just seemed to jump out at me. Also, Tommy Caldwell got a great sound from his P-Bass (I think it was a P-Bass).

Does It Really Happen by YES.  Chris plays a non-reverse blue Thunderbird and it sounds like a drill straight to the soul.

For me, it was Yes's cover of Paul Simon's, America. Chris's driving quarter notes with that growl and Bink-Bink-Bink-Bink on top. Wow. Well put, like a drill straight to the soul.

Tommy Caldwell was an amazing bass player! I do believe Ben is correct that Tommy played a P-Bass. He was one of my earliest influences when I started to play the bass.
