Nick Ashford, of Motown's Ashford and Simpson, passed away yesterday (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/motown-songwriter-nick-ashford-dead-at-70-20110822).

He wrote some Major Hit records!

He and his wife were also very charitable.  I attended the Patti Austin concert, which was recorded for CD at the Bottom Line.  They were in the audience and ended up donating $10,000 to find a cure for AIDS in Ms. Austin's honor.  Patti Austin was incredible, (Zev Katz on bass)  and you should check out her imitations of Michael McDonald aka Anita Baker (had to be there to understand the situation, reproduced on the recording).

He knew how to write a song (Found a Cure, Is it Still Good To Ya) and always put on a great show
