Title: Ear worm!
Post by: wishbass on May 30, 2012, 03:46:57 PM
Usually I have music,or basslines that I'm working on, go through my head all day,but today I got a bassline in my head that wouldn't go away,Back On The Chain Gang by the Pretenders.Love this group, and the song, but this has been an off and on earworm for me going on 20yrs.Another is Let's Go by The Cars.Anyone else have this, and what song(s)?

Too many to list them all.  By-Tor & the Snow Dog, The Real Me, the theme from Sanford & Son, Subway to Venus (Chili Peps) just to name a few...  Makes it hard to get work done!

There's probably a bunch, but one that interestingly keeps showing up is Street Corner Talking (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J65HA5D1SGA) by Savoy Brown, which I guess I've been running over and over in my head for four decades now.  It's a simple twelve bar blues tune, but the studio version is just really compelling in its simplicity.  Great keyboard sound, nice biting lead guitar; but I guess it's the repetition of the basic hook that got it stuck in my head.

Yeah, the list is endless.  One of my faves to run through my head is Rock On from David Essex.  Dear Prudence is another one.

How about a little  Nick Lowe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Yc2DOCtR_w target=_blank)?  Gotta dig those off-beats...

Once had the bassline for 'Do The Bust Stop' by The Fatback Band in my head for ages.
Usually it's the pinched harmonic section by Jaco on 'Birdland'

Also, there's a Happy Apple song called Where does a stranger go on Christmas? that i can't find a link to. But you should look it up. Because everything Happy Apple does (after their first record) is absolutely amazing.

Speaking of harmonics, one that often visits me for a day or 2 is the beginning section of The Awakening by the Reddings. There is a nice clip on Youtube of a guy doing a play along on his Alembic EVH....

For some reason, the ones that seem to get stuck the most are things I absolutely hate.

Loved the Gentle Giant Vid!I hadn't heard of them until 5or 6 years ago. It's seems these days music is too easily catagorized, and blurring the edges has fallen out of fashion.Sure, there is some crossover here and there, but the audience is dwindling that can appreciate it.I 've always loved progressive music, and hold it up there w/any of the greats.

Peter, when that happens, start singing It's A Small World...... =).......it'll get rid of the other song, but I'm not sure how to get rid of that one!

I work on lots of old movies, and often musicals. The Wizard of Oz can be a real difficult thing to shake. Recently I have gotten stuck on Annie, Dumb Dog just wouldn't go away. Currently, I am helplessly humming the theme to Lawrence Of Arabia ALL THE TIME! Anything by Ennio Morricone is also really hard to excise.

I tend to see life in musical terms & songs will pop into my head that pertain to whatever situation I'm in. For example, when I ride my Harley & hit 90 mph, the line from Hendrix's Crosstown Traffic 90 miles an hour is the speed I drive! always pops in my head!

@ jcdlc72...Whoa!  Haven't heard THAT tune for ages.  Will put that CD on my weekend rotation.  Thanks.
Btw, when those horns hit on the intro....game on!

As far as Ear Worm---it's what ever song is referred to or heard while I'm in passive mode.
For instance, I over heard one coworker mentioned something her grand daughter said, with a punch line of Who let the dogs out?
Yeh...thanks alot, lady!  Took about 2 hours to get THAT piece of crap out of my head.

There are lots of these:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vgfeLat3RI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vgfeLat3RI)  same as it ever was

and of course - Psycho Killer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=galXYbepW_s&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=galXYbepW_s&feature=related)   WOW _ Adrian and his JC120 feedback - the good old days before guitar synthesizers.

Probably the worst ear worm (as Peter stated) is a song you hate - like Joan Jett's I love rock and roll

I play in a band called Chain Gang, and guess what. We play the song Back on the Chain Gang along with other Pretender's songs. Which is kind of ironic because my ex fiance was a big Chrissy Hynde fan.
And you should check out Les Claypool's version ofThe Awakening from Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel's High Ball with the Devil CD. Great Bass line. I've seen him do it live several times.
