Very interesting, and sad too...a time will come where the good wood will be extinct and we'll be showing our grandkids what good wood looks and sounds like...Tony

We need wood farms with select instrument wood choices . The time to start is now because as we all know these trees will take a long time to grow .

Wolf,
That was my first thought as well. I mean we farm everything else. I do realize that the age of the tree and climate conditions will affect the rings and tonal quality. But why not? Looks like a pending market here. My knowledge in this kind of thing is at best limited however there are those who aren't.

Someone could probably go out and collect the abandoned trees that were not black.  I'm assuming that ebony rots fairly slowly, because it's so dense.  If they really did cut down 10 to 20 trees for one perfect one, should be a lot out there.

One thing about farming: not every species will allow itself to be farmed. I think that African Blackwood and Ebony are in this camp; Morel mushrooms would be a good example. Nobody can grow them-- you have to find them in the wild.

Just put a spin on it:  special rare multi-hued ebony!  Not just the run of the mill black stuff!  Hey, it works for Macassar Ebony.

Or, more anolagous, chocolate diamonds.  I think we're on to something here!

I just bought an aftermaket neck (with an ebony FB) for my T-40.  It's got some subtle browns in it, but I think it looks great.

I love multicolored ebony. Chocolate diamonds also sound cool!

Sometimes it just takes time to find out how to farm; my ex used to work with a professor in mycology; he managed to grow oyster mushrooms commercially(yes you can find them now, but 12 years ago, good luck easily) she used to bring home bags of them...Yum!
We all need to push for more efficient use of wood and reforestation; how about an Alembic sponsored exotic wood planting program? would plant the seeds of their future and more...Tony

You never know , perhaps Alembic Inc. could get a grant ! There
could be variety of possibilities for such a venture .

How about Alembic.Org for such a venture . It would be a very hip venture for Mother Earth !
