Title: Happy 4/20!
Post by: lbpesq on April 20, 2013, 12:22:51 AM
A very happy and healthy 4/20 to all of my Alembic brethren.  May our instruments help to supply the soundtrack as we stand at the dawn of change and watch the walls of prohibition crumble all around us.

Also, it's Record Store Day! This particular year, I have a more personal relationship to it as a recording I made for Imagine Dragons this past summer at Independent Records in Denver is being released as RSD only release on Interscope Records. My first label release! it was a bit of a surprise as I sent them the multitrack files and a very quick and dirty reference rough mix in September and I found out a couple weeks ago that they're using the rough mix. I figured that a signed band would do their own mixing or at least get me to do one with a bit more care.

Meanwhile, I'm playing a 4/20 celebration tomorrow, which should be interesting now that it's legal and all in Colorado. Sort of. Given that I'm not a partaker these days, it's all academic to me, but it will be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out. Part of me is thinking that legalization will actually crack down on it a little more since now it will be more in the spotlight and spur lawmaking entities, both state and municipal, to regulate and enforce more strictly. Then there's that pesky federal issue.

You're talking about blackbirds baked in a pie, right Bill?!!! :-)

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.

Baked, perhaps.

Baked in brownies would probably be better! :-)

This time last year I was enjoying the hospitality of Bill, tgo and family and 4/20 is the day I picked up my Series II bass from Mica at Alembic. :-)

And we thank you, Bill, for the whacks you have taken at those walls!

Smoking marajuana is more fun than drinking beer
But a friend of ours was captured and they gave him thirty years
Maybe we should raise our voices, ask somebody why?
But demonstrations are a drag
Besides, we're much too high
And I'm sure it wouldn't interest
Anybody
Outside of a small circle of friends

Peter:

Thanks for the Phil Ochs reference.  It brought a smile to my face.  Not enough people remember Phil and his music.

And as we enjoy today, remember the words of Country Joe and the Fish:

Don't Bogart that joint, my friend.  Hand it over to me

Or, as Tom Petty might say:

But let me get to the point Let's roll another joint And turn the radio loud

Personally, I think the only substance that should be illegal is meth.

And why is drinking legal???  It messes up your driving the most.

Country Joe did Bogart?  I'll have to look that one up; I'm only familiar w/Holy Modal Rounders' version.
I agree about Phil; Pleasures of the Harbor has been one of my desert island albums for about 40 years now.

Actually, the original Don't Bogart That Joint was by Fraternity of Man, I believe.  I've also heard Little Feat do it on Waiting for Columbus.

My parents had Phil Ochs in Concert, part of the soundtrack of my youth.

I just looked it up, and Bill is right; the Fraternity of Man did the original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKzDmFN_oyI), which is on their debut eponymous album from 1968, and also in the 1969 movie Easy Rider.

OK, I confess brain fart; I was thinking the Easy Rider version was the Rounders.  Can't imagine how I could forget....
(What date was that again?)

Peter (Who still needs to check out Joe's version)
