Whilst I'm not a huge fan of MK i found this interesting enough to watch all the way through.

Now I know why he likes such a thin sound on his bass.

Yeah..he has always used light guage, from his early days when he was slapping the hell out of JD basses.
I once tried them..you can slap really fast but they do as you say have a very thin sound.

I guess that has become his trademark sound and, as he states, why they L42 used synth basslines along with his bass lines.
 
It also explains why I've never heard a status bass with any bottom end live or on youtube video's by people covering a MK/Level 42 songs.
He still had that sound when he was using alembic basses but we know they have no shortage of bottom end.

Yes - good find.  I watched this before and as ever he comes over as a really down to earth bloke with a nice sense of humour.  I watched him on the One show  not too long ago - same thing....no side on him, he is just great and pleasant with it (and he sings!) Glynn
