some older alembics don't have serial numbers because they were employee projects.http://painandgrief.com/aaa/fcbasssite/alembic/10.htm (http://painandgrief.com/aaa/fcbasssite/alembic/10.htm)

Some of the earlier instruments had their serial number at the end of the fret board. Over the years these get worn off through playing or when the neck is leveled as part of a fret job.

Do you have a particular bass you are trying to determine the serial number for?

You can check the Serial Number Guide (http://www.alembic.com/support/reference.html#sernum target=_blank) on the Reference page on the main Alembic site. Just below the table it has some suggestions where you might find the serial number on the instrument.

Every Alembic has a serial number. Even old ones! The oldest ones have it on the tippy-top of the peghead.

It may have been removed if it was stolen, it may have worn off like Keith suggests from playing. But it always has a serial number.

Aside from personal employee projects which are not Alembics and do not have serial numbers, there are a few instruments that were stolen from us before they were completed, and these of course never got a chance to be finished and get their serial numbers.

Although this is my third Alembic ,  it must be me getting older but I have been very interested in these basses  the more I find out the more I want to know about the history in general of alembic ! Thanks everyone especially mica for putting up with a 54 year old kid ! I find it fascinating.  Bruce
