I hope that all in our area  here in California near the Mothership are well and have  experienced  little or no damage to their structures and items.

Thanks for posting this here Wolf.  I heard about it this morning when I checked the news.  I've read that there are power outages, gas leaks, etc, throughout the Bay area, including in Santa Rosa.  The only significant damage I've read about so far is the buckling of a highway off-ramp; apparently bridges and such appear to be fine.  Residents reporting shattered glass, etc.

Hoping all of our Bay area Alembic family are unscathed.

I've read reports of a few highway closings, and of structural damage in Napa.

Said to be the strongest since the Loma Prieta quake in 1989.

I hope everyone is ok. I still have friends out there and heard from one they are doing fine just some broken glass and that they are a little jumpy. I went through the Loma Prieta quake in 89' and the Morgan Hill quake in 84' (was only a 1/2 mile from epicenter for that one). No matter how one comes out of it they are all unnerving.

I thought I had a dream last night around 3:00 a.m. that I felt an earthquake.  I had forgotten about it this morning when my mom called from N.Y. worried about us - then I remembered my hazy half-asleep dream.  No damage here (about 40-50 miles away).  Just like back in '89, , the TV people are focusing on damage, showing the same scenes over and over, making it seem worse to the rest of the country.  Thankfully, there appear to be few injuries.

Weathered it fine here - though the shaking was vigorous and extended. I was actually awake when it happened (I took an old lady nap in the afternoon!) so I got the whole ride.

Mica , That is good news . I was awake for the entire ride as well . The shaking seemed to last quite some time here  , perhaps approximately 20 seconds. (That would be about 40 miles from the epicenter.)  After the event I made my report of observations to The USGS as I usually do. Anyone can make a report there, It really helps them out.

Glad to hear there is safe reporting coming from our West Coast brethren. Somehow I knew at some point there would be some collective low B / E string repercussions built up that would need to be released.
Be safe out there,
Pete

At the UC Davis Campus in the 1970's I remember  visiting a laboratory  that was engaging in a geotectonic study of the effects of liquefaction during a seismic event. A  6 Hz waveform was used to replicate an earthquake and make  model buildings sink into the wet sand . The entire project had representations on the geological features of the grater San Francisco Bay Area.
