Title: What ever happened to...
Post by: funkyjazzjunky on January 05, 2015, 01:56:55 PM
What happened to EBow?

What happened to Lightwave infrared pickups?

What happened to bass Midi?

Were not all these items supposed to revolutionize the industry?

That stuff reminds me of the bicycle industry; every year someone would show up at the big trade show with something that'll change the world...that been done before five years ago and failed...they always ended up in the same area of the show (sideshow?) and they'd always die a slow or fast death depending on their funding and blindness...Ebow is still around though and I saw a show with Peter Frampton using one just yesterday...

I saw 2010 when it came out and forget almost everything about it, I should watch the two movies again...I miss Arthur C Clarke, and Stanley Kubrick...Tony

That's funny Tony,
Because of this thread, last night I ended up watching clips of Hal9000 taunting Dave.
What a smorgasborg for the senses.I'm glad I saw it in the theaters as a kid, I'm going to have to watch it and 2010 again.

I'll admit I prefer the 27 speeds I have now over the old 3 speed schwinn I had in the 70's ;)

I'm sorry Dave, I can't open the pod bay door.

That quote scares me today more than ever . . . .

I recently saw an episode of Foo Fighters Sonic Highways and one of the guitarists was using an Ebow to perform his part in the song they created for the featured city (New York - ?).

So - the Ebow is alive and well.

BTW: I really enjoyed that entire series. Great concept and really well executed. Highly recommended viewing.

Whatever happened to the Toucan bass? I played one once, great bass...

And where did all those little head-less basses from the 80's go? Like my killer Yamaha BX-1???

And how is it that I still see Hammond B3s in every major gig on TV, including those  in the white house? Don't they know they are obsolete???

Inquiring simple minds like mine want to know.

All the headless basses are working on cruise ships, because the musicians live in solitary untill showtime...I have room for a bass with a head so I will use one, prefer to have a proper end to the neck as opposed to a dead end sign...there's a difference between sounds like and feels like; ther are Hammond emulators but they don't have the FEEL; I've heard Moog Taurus pedal emulators and the real thing and the originals just have a physical depth to the sound that is crazy; hard to describe and quantify, so hard to emulate...like all the great stereo stuff; how does one thing sound so musical and another sound cold and clinical? so subtle, but all the difference...I changed my interconnects and speaker cables and my stereo went from good with slight treble fatigue to wonderfully musical and happy to be blasted by(it's really loud)...anyway, I'm ranting and I'll start the big bike thread when I ever learn how to resize pictures...Tony

Funny, now all the bikes have those integral races, but as an old bike mechanic I am still not sold...that is a beautiful bike!

Definitely eye candy .  As far as the new Bike's go I am not really not completely sold on the carbon fiber craze yet .  I have seen a few failures and breaks on the frames & forks, including one owned by a friend .  I think I will keep my interests and riding on the old lugged Italian steel frames . Friction shifting, threaded freewheels and 120 mm or 126 mm rear dropout spacing as well ! Old School . They can even keep their sealed hubs , I still have and use my Campagnolo cone wrenches from the early 1970's ! .

Wolf, we are clearly Brothers as we are of the same mind...funny as I am a former bike mechanic/designer and I still feel like that; not all forward movement is improvement in my view...Tony

Tony , Brother , I agree on your statements above.__ It seems that my love for working on , riding and building swell old school bicycles has intensified with my advancing age as well . Everything seems relative to my perception  , life is like a bicycle , if you keep moving you will not tip over !  Perhaps this concept is just part of my survival instinct . Or perhaps I just like to work with my hands and mind in
in sync. That seems to be just like playing music as well ! Again , that seems to be right!

Wolf,

we have hijacked this thread; to all I am sorry, I WILL learn how to resize and post photos here so I can start the bike thread...I even took an aerospace composite repair course to learn about carbon fibre; the stuff is cool and is repairable if ya got the right equipment, which many surfboard/sailboard/boat guys have...anyway I just don't like the look of new road bikes, they look too much like the mountain bikes and I don't even like the look of most new mountain bikes...road bikes should look sleek and graceful, with slender tubes preferably brazed into nice lugs, and tasteful chrome...

I like sealed bearings(I'm an old mechanic, so I'm lazy...) but Campagnolo stuff lasts forever even unsealed; when I was still wrenching someone brought in a pair of wheels with 3-piece Campy hubs in them, early '60's; guy wanted them overhauled...I called him and refused to do it. The bearings were original and everything was worn in perfectly to each other the hubs were like new; shoot grease in every year and it will live forever...anyway he actually listened and heeded my words...so, should I start with my road bikes or the cruisers? or mountain bikes?...Tony

Looking forward to the bike thread. I've always been an old school cyclist. Just to bring the thread slightly back on track, remember the Raleigh Chopper?  There's a new version (http://www.raleigh.co.uk/Company/News/?item=/2014/08/14/new-raleigh-chopper-evokes-golden-era-of-motor-sport/) coming out this year.
Not sure if this classic of British cycling made it across the pond but it was responsible for hundreds of young boys screaming in agony as they came off - it had a US style stick shift on the top tube, right where you didn't want to land in an accident :-)

Graeme,
I had a classmate that had relocated from the UK - he brought his bike with him.
Not sure what brand, but it was certainly cool - classic chopped bike; small front tire, banana seat and ape hangers.

Jeremy Staples, he had the cool bike, the cool accent and I would go along with anything he said. . . . I still have callousses on me bum from the trouble I got into with him.
God those were the days!

Oh yeah, those came over here, Canada anyway, along with the Schwinns...then came those motocrosses with the shocks that weighed WAY too much...I'll ask my workmate how to do the photos and maybe I'll start with my Cook Bros stuff as I already have pics of them and they're the most valuable...Tony
