I'm just finishing up the remodel of my music room and am looking for recommendations or stay away from for wall guitar hangers. For the moment I am mainly looking for single instrument hangers. I would like them all to be handle my Jazz boxes and acoustic guitars as well as my solid body instruments (i.e. be able to handle body depths of up to 4.5). Thanks.

Hercules makes some nice gravity-activated wall hangers with thick wooden backer panels. Like their instrument stands, the clasp mechanism opens and releases the instrument when the instrument is lifted.
If you can't attach the hanger directly to a stud, you'll want to make sure that the attachment method (screws, etc.) is reinforced behind the hanger so the weight of the instrument doesn't pull the hanger out of the wall.
And, if you live in a dry climate (like I do), you'll also want to make sure that you have a humidifier in the area where the instruments are hanging to keep the humidity at 40% (+/-).

I suppose this is as good a time as any to ask... Does hanging a bass by the neck hurt the alignment? On neck throughs, like Alembics, it may be less of an issue, but I was told long ago that it's potentially harmful to the instrument - but all the stores do it!!! Thoughts??

which holds my practice bass (not alembic) which weighs in at just over 12lbs
The the other is this type which usually holds my acoustic guitar or electric guitar.

I actually prefer the first one show as the hanger swings so the bass always hangs vertically. I've read that some of the padding materials used on the hanger can migrate into the finish of the guitar but I've not noticed anything like that and they have been used to hang my guitars for over a decade.

...since 2005, there's been 12 instruments hanging from them in my music room. No issues with finish reactions or instability. Expensive, but nice.

I forget where it was posted, but someone asked about the effect of hanging a bass or guitar and it was pointed out that the effect of the tension of the strings far outweighed any possible effect of the weight of the body.

Hanging by the headstock is fine unless it's something like a Telecaster where you may actually be hanging against the tuner...if you are hanging an instrument with a nitrocellulose finish, the foam or latex rubber padding will react, so replace that with a leather pad and you're fine...Tony

I noticed some dark patches on the thin PU finish of my Epic where it sat on a K&M wall-hanger (see my profile pic).
I've stopped using the wall-hangers, but I never noticed any adverse effect of gravity versus string pull. :-)

+1 on the Hercules hangers. I have them up on my walls and even my MK 5, which weighs just shy of 15 lbs doesn't cause it any grief.

After looking at the Hercules I decided to go with their GSP39WB (http://www.herculesstands.com/guitars/GSP39WB.html). I like the idea of three screws and metal mount. My intent is to put up a mounting board attached to the wall studs then mount the hangers from it. They are on order should be here shortly. I lucked out and hit a Presidents Day sale and got them for $14.45 shipping included.

I've also used the Hercules. I've heard that the Rickenbacker company uses them in their showroom so the guitars don't fall off in the event of an earthquake. That sold me.

I got one for Christmas. Waiting for cabin reno to be done before I mount it but it looks great!

If you get the Hercules, keep an eye on the 4 rivets that hold the sliding mechanism together. I've had 2 where the rivets have separated and the mechanism has come apart. Luckily not when I've had an Alembic in one.

I've never had that problem with the Hercules (and I've mounted about 20 of them in my friend's store) but I did swap out the mounting screws that came with them for longer screws as I thought the supplied screws were a little short. Just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the warning. I'll try to keep that in mind.
I am going to use the wall hangers for instruments I use less frequently than my main basses. Right now I intend to use them for my acoustic guitar, George Benson Ibanez and Hagstrom 8 bass. My main basses I will be keeping on floor stands in front of the hangers. I've found over the years if an instrument isn't out where I can see it, it tends not to get played. So this is a way to keep them from being closet queens.
