I am sure that those who choose to attend will have a good time and the band and promoter will clean up. Nothing wrong with that but also hard to get particularly excited about.

Saw them there in '91, and that experience (along with Vince) made it my last show. But as to Chicago itself, my dear Mr. Panzer, we're 'heads here, too* - would love to see them at the Uptown Theater one more time. But with Anastasio? Not even there. I'm afraid I may have to give this one a pass; if they had Jimmy Herring with them, maybe - but not Trey - or Soldier Field, a truly horrible venue.

*But I do take your point.........

I have nothing against Chi-town, The Windy City, Hog Butcher for the World. But the appropriate venue for a last gig would be home - the Bay Area, where it all started.

The collective consciousness has been pushing for a mini tour w/ different guitarists at each venue.... I doubt it would happen, but it would be nice if they did a couple of nights at Oakland and MSG beforehand.... boot Billy Joel from his residency, and show him how it's done....

The Billboard article clearly lays out the rationale, but it does seem more appropriate to finish things where they started?not where they ended. I guess, though, being in Chicago will make it easier for people from both coasts to attend.

The second problem is that the audio in no way of course matches the fake subtitles , therefore the audio would best be fixed or removed. Third , I lost relatives at the hands of the Nazis,including my grandfather and my family lost all our farmland and dairy business. I would be a billionaire now if it were not for Mr. Hitler____ All of my family were German citizens and I the only American citizen among them . We did not know of any Germans who had any love for Nazis.____ Sorry for the HIjack , I just think that video is lame ( I could use stronger words ), from my perspective ! ( smiles added for polite decorum only)

Sorry moderators, I just had to write this ! The Grateful Dead are about musical joy in my life , NOT Nazi's. But then everyone is entitled to their opinion. That is the beauty of the American constitution .

With that said the Dead should certainly come to Alpine Valley in East Troy - hands down a much more natural setting then Soldier Field.
Parking on grass, seating on grass, smoking grass vs. Concrete, steel and asphalt.

I'd concur that Alpine Valley would be a preferred location. Love what I saw and heard there many, many years ago. I also agree that parking on grass and seating on grass if preferable to what's available at Soldier Field. Technically, I can't speak to whether it's preferable to smoke grass versus concrete, steel, or asphalt since I've never tried to do that with the latter three.

Yes, I could do Alpine - maybe even with Trey. Saw them there in '80, '82, '84, 85, & '86 - a fine time was had by all!

Peter (and before you ask about the gaps, in '81 when they swung through here the band I was doing monitors for was on the road, always a city ahead or behind them - not the same venues - and in '83 they did Poplar Creek instead; good show, but not the Alpine experience.....)

Phish is a decent band; they just a writer, singer & lead guitarist. Anyone who thinks they've picked up the Dead's mantle never saw the Dead.

Warren is great with Govt Mule, but less so with ABB, and he just can't bring it for the Dead - love him, but it's not what he does.

A friend used to tell me with every new Kansas, Van Halen, and Rush album No, this one is different - you'll like this one! They never were, and I never did.

Also because...I saw a number of GD shows when Bruce Hornsby was playing with them. They always got something interesting going with him - sometimes something brilliant.

heres my take
i d rather hear trey then see tray/ facial gyrators turn me off. v kadelik? trey. has his own sound and a good voice. i no like clones.... and hornsby is a nice plus.
it would have been cool if they could have brought in some of the other guys who have sat in
like haynes, kadelik, barraco etc. for a few tunes

as far as it not being the grateful dead?
if i follow the logic.....
jerry is dead therefore it cannot be the grateful dead
ok
therefore the grateful dead stopped existing in 1973 when pig pen died and then that band stopped existing in 1990 when brent died.

the band is the grateful dead...membership is fluid..

The choice of the venue is just sad. I was at the last show and have no interest in going back. Since the dead is no more and it was always about the music, this is just a poor way to celebrate the music driven by money instead. I'm not saying it's the musicians. I won't be going because no concert is worth that much cash in a venue that size in the middle of a large city. I won't be watching pay per view either. I will just wait for the DVD in the cheap bin in 20 years if I live that long. I will still have the memory of the last show at the field and I don't really want to mess with that. Mostly because it was a special show for me that had nothing to do with it being Jerry's last. Would love to see the show but not in this setting.
