I still like my FM radio here is the USA . What is the sentiment about this amongst the public in Norway and our European friends in the Alembic World ?

Public radio and WMSE (91.7) would be deeply missed . . .

An excuse to make everyone buy new radios?

I would miss KCSM /KPFA/KQED/KLAX/KDFC ..etc.... in my area.
Hopefully all the stations in Norway will be able to get the equipment change over taken care of.
What Bill mentions will likely have the hardest impact on the public to have to buy new radios if the digital stream to their computer is not available for whatever reason or not convenient . A carpenter or a painter for example will want a radio to take to work instead.

If it goes like TV did fringe areas will be hurt. For driving long distances I expect to have more dead air than you have with analog as even though you might lose stereo and get some fade analog you can still listen to analog radio. With digital it will just cut in and out or off altogether. This might not be a problem in a smaller country like Norway but in a large open country like the US or Canada it will be.

On a plus note it frees up a lot of frequencies for anyone to form their own radio station!
It is a sad loss though but digital does have a lot more choice.

I remember when WNEW in NY went from the best Rock station to all talk radio. That was a bummer.
