I'm not talking '58 Explorers or '59 'Bursts. I mean gear that is actually a somewhat reasonable goal?things you look for at guitar shows or periodically check eBay and the like for? I'll start it off:
1. Late 70's Veillette-Citron
2. Schecter Saturn (black like Pete Townshend played)
3. Rickenbacker Model 1997 in Fireglo (the Rose Morris reissue)
4. 1986/1987 PRS in Santana Yellow
5. Mint late 70's Alembic Series I in birdseye or zebrawood
6. Boogie Mark I or II combo amp

1. Fairly recent Alembic Series I or II short scale bass.

Mesa Boogie bass Strategy Eight:88. Unlikely to ever see one this side of the pond to even try out.

I've had the hots for one of these, and this is interesting to hear the development team talk about this in Japanese engineer's terms, far more than just numbers and CFD targets: Amazing in the way they talk about it in terms of leveraging Honda's considerable depth to deliver a very certain feeling in an all-new air-cooled motor; it suggests they feel about that the way we feel about tube amps. As you can see, most of these people are young enough to have NEVER ridden the range of air-cooled four cylinders from the old days, so Honda busted out a selection from Honda's considerable museum, the Collection at Twin Ring Motegi, to give them a sense of what they were about.

Realistically... hmmm.
There are but two basses left to acquire... the first is the Alembic custom fretless I've been pestering everyone here about. The other is a Turner Model One. I've never seen a five-string example, and kinda' hope *not to* for the next 6 or 8 months.

I too would love to pick up an old Veillette-Citron. There have been a few on eBay, but the seller asks stupid money (IMHO). I do have one of Joe Veillette's Gryphon 18.5 scale 12 strings. Essentially a mandolin on steroids that a guitar player can play!

I almost forgot:
The late 60s / early 70s Japanese bass I had (identified as a St. George, I have no idea if that was correct or not): 2 pickups, rocker switches for the pickups, neck like a baseball bat. It cost me $45. I sold it, and I know where it is, but the current owner says I can't have it until he dies, and he's a lot younger than me.

One more Alembic guitar: the completion of my custom Spectrum project that was unexpectedly (but justifiably) sidelined by the purchase of an orphaned Series II five-string bass earlier this year.
And a Benedetto Manhattan. There's a used one on consignment at the guitar store where I work part-time that is dead mint. Unfortunately, the owner wants stooopid money for it.
But more important than either of those - more time to play, enjoy and really appreciate the gear I already own.

I would love an Alembic 8-string - one was almost within my grasp a few years ago but alas it wasn't meant to be. I have a Rickenbacker 8-string, though, so I can't complain.
Lately I've been fantasizing about a fretted Guild M-85 II to Alembicize, but I can be satisfied with one (on the way!)
What I would really like is a nice tube amp - been starting to get interested in Mesa Boogie but don't see that happening anytime soon.

Joey..I rode all the air cooled four cylinder Honda's in the 70's, the 400, 500, 550 and 750 AND the six cylinder CBX, the last one was like a turbine engine but the handling was horrendous, I know someone who has one and when I look at the swingarm on the rear and compare it to my Fireblade, no wonder the thing wanted to bend in the middle as it was so skinny. It had those FVQ dampers(which we called Fade Very Quickly!) so that added to the equation.
RC30, had the pleasure of looking after one whilst my friend was working abroad, sort of, you know, keep the battery charged by thrashing it on the country roads of the UK, well I was doing him a favour wasn't I ?? LOL

A St George? You had that in Iowa? My first bass back in Iowa was a St George I bought from Renier's. A Fender-esque body, heavy as hell, two ugly white rocker switches for pickup on/off. I bought it in 67 or 68 (after playing my dad's NICE post-war Gibson wide body / no cutaway guitar as a bass for one Jr high dance and being told I couldn't use it again). I think I traded it in on a used EB-2 by 1970 and never looked back. I actually have pictures of me in High school with that bass in my first band, The Jems. (Yeah, I know.) I mostly played it through a Silvertone 2-12 guitar amp. What a crapfest!
I was playing Come On Down To My Boat, Satisfaction, Sky Pilot, and dreaming of learning Brown Eyed Girl back then.

I think it's the same bass. Did you trade it back in at Renier's? That's where I bought it. $45, but I got $20 in trade in for my POS Kent bass.
I was playing through a Heathkit 2 x 12.
I was playing in the high school jazz band, and got the St George 2 days before a concert. The Kent was short scale, the St George was long scale. We were playing a Maynard Ferguson song with a long unison section. I could no longer reach all of the notes in root position, and had to quickly learn what those higher frets were for.
I'd love to see a picture if you could find one.

Heathkit! My first amp was a Heathkit I bought with my Bar Mitzvah money, (along with a $30 Japanese electric from Sam Goody's), and built myself. I think it was a TA-16. It had reverb and tremolo. I remember how cool it was that I could turn up the tremolo and play Crimson & Clover. I still regret selling it to a friend for $10 in 1973 on the eve of my moving from NY to California.

Just to further hijack the thread:
We put together a combo in high school. We were playing a party, and on a break, my friends completely disassembled by bass and amp. They didn?t break anything, but if it was held together with screws or clips, they unscrewed and unclipped it.
Putting everything back together began my education on maintaining basses and amps.

That does sound like the old bass player joke - My band mates don't like me - they de-tuned my bass when I wasn't looking. So what? They didn't tell me which strings they had de-tuned

An old Hiwatt( I almost bought one, but am glad I didn't trade in my JCM 800 to do so), or an old Orange; one day I may have both...I would love a Ricky even though I'm building one with Alembic guts, and maybe replace the '81 BC Rich Eagle I sold to buy my Distillate ( I sorta regret that, but it was worth it)...In guitars I think a Gibson Firebird may top the list(I'd take a Thunderbird too) and a good Gretsch...Tony

I wish there were no dishonest folk around. Had my gig bags stolen last week and I've worked out I've lost over a grand (uk pounds) in gear.

Ouch Jacko that's disgusting, what were the circumstances of the theft, was it at a gig? if you don't mind sharing. Anything we can keep our eyes open on-line for?

Partially my own fault V. I left my bags in the boot after a gig a week ago and left them there as we're selling our house and Mrs J figured the house looks tidier when my stuff is out of sight.
The full list is too much to post but it includes my warwick pedalboard with Mesa footswitch, EBS chorus and Ashdown hyperdrive pedals,. Shure SM58 mic, Zoom H2 recorder, Line6 wireless transmitter etc. There's also a spare amp head (ashdown little giant,a lot of cables and a couple of stands.
Had to borrow a guitar lead for a gig we played this weekend. The insurance won't cover the full amount but I should be able to replace most of the important bits.

Well, it's good that the insurance will help. But when one of our fellow human beings does something like this to us, it hurts. To offset the harm that some do for their own selfish interests, others work to make the world a better place for all. And Graeme, your contributions to our community here have certainly made our world better.

Thanks Dave. I'm looking at this as an opportunity to try out new pedals. Probably the EBS billy Sheehan drive and either the tech21 bass Chorus or the Aguilar Chorusaurus :-)

Graeme , I am sorry to read of your theft story. Most certainly I hope that you get suitable replacements along with some extra perks from the Universe in return, You most certainly are entitled now as a result of such a turn of events.
