Odd, my understanding is that when an object resonates at the same frequency as a vibrating string, that it will absorb the strings energy and kill the sustain.

Basically what they're doing is a way to increase the neck/body contact area; especially with the strat model it's nowhere near a neck through contact...I remember reading about a guitarist(I wish I could remember who but I think he was a 2nd gen blues guy)who used to take his strat's neck off and put glue in the pocket and bolt it back in; made the thing rock solid and boosted the tone he claimed...I suspect that the glue thing will work as well or better than the Backbone; funny, I had forgotten all about that 'till now; maybe I should try that on my Tele...Tony.

Tony:  Albert Collins.  I once stood 3 feet from him while he played; don't know if it was the glue or not, but day-um it sure sounded good!!!

I have an 86 Squire Strat (MIJ) and it is a hard tail with the strings through the body like a Tele. It does seem to sustain more than the normal whammy bar.

Use a sustain pedal, I doubt any vintage owners would put one on their guitars.

I take the neck off of all my bolt-on instruments and inspect the neck pocket.
 
If there is any stray glue, rubbing compound, paint or any other foreign material in there (or on the neck), I sand it off to ensure a solid wood-to-wood contact point. Then I put the neck back on, tightening the mounting screws as tight as possible without stripping the threads.
 
IMO, solid wood-to-wood contact is critical for improved tone and sustain for instruments with bolt-on necks and this is an easy way to accomplish that.
