Title: Sonicus Projects , Current And Past.
Post by: sonicus on May 11, 2015, 07:55:15 PM
Hello friends ,
I have decided expose  my current and past musical projects  to our Alembic Brothers and Sisters. I will start with a current project  that is brand new. The links that I provide here were from the first musical collaboration of my self and the two guitarists. The drummer has been a musical collaborator with me for about the last year or so and him and I flow like water,   The lead guitarist is playing an Alembic Further and I am playing my Alembic single pickup Distillate 81-0325
I will continue to add content as  back as far as I find all the way into  the 1970's .

This was our first musical experiment;

Great stuff Wolf! What is the LED by your cable for?
Title: Re: Sonicus Projects , Current And Past.
Post by: sonicus on May 12, 2015, 08:52:27 AM
Hi Rusty, Thanks !
The LED on my Distillate was an indicator LED on earlier Distillates that shines when your cord is plugged into the Bass. Some folks disconnect that LED to preserve battery life.

Thanks for checking out the links.

Hello Rusty,
I wish I could say that I had an Alembic fretless that I played on that tune but it was not. I am still looking for that Alembic fretless with my name on it . ( so to speak ).

The fretless that I played on that cut was a  bolt on Jazz Bass type project assembled of parts that I collected  in the early 1990s. The body is a simple Stewart-Macdonald  , Ash Jazz bass body. The bridge is a Schaller roller saddle bridge, The tuners are also Schaller large gear Fender types . The neck was originally a Chandler lined fretless neck made from Maple with a rosewood lined fingerboard that I saw hanging in a local music store that I traded other merchandise for. I wanted to have the fingerboard finished with a hard epoxy like finish such as JACO had done. ___Next ;  Jerry Dorsch (co-founder of Modulus Graphite with Geoff) applied the finish to the neck and also applied a clear finish to the body. Jerry also supplied  a set of Bartolini 9W4 JJ pickups and assembled all the parts since he already had it all in his shop at the time . In the future I will likely install Alembic JJ Activator pickups in this bass.

Well, it sounded great! I love the sound of a fretless! You play it very well too! I have one I built in woodshop in high school. I put a Mighty Mite fretted neck on it, but later had the frets removed so you can still see the lines where the frets were. I've often thought about sending it to Alembic to have them refinish it & install Activators, but I'm still on my honeymoon with my Europa, so that would be way down the road.

Post a picture of your fretless if you have one.

Hi Rusty,
Thank you so very much. I had a few shop classes in High School as well . I think music and shop class were my favorites . Tinkering and playing music remains to be precious to me. Your Europa is truly wonderful and must be a joy to play. I think if I had an Alembic Custom fretless it might have a Europa  or Jazz Bass shape ! I will  definitely post pics on this site of the fretless that I used on the sound track of that vid after I install the Alembic Activators to keep Alembic content. I am hoping that I will be able to get the old style JJ Activators with Volume/Volume/Filter . The Bartolini 9W4's are nice BUT I prefer the sound of Alembic.

Dear friends,
Last evening I received an email from one of the producers from the Funk  Dub Division recording projects that CD Baby had posted more content on You Tube that I played on .I think that they were looking for television advertising /video /motion picture /etc, sound track deals. I got a few calls from them for such content.
There is lots more to come.
On this track I play my Alembic Distillate  . The track is called  BRITISH INVASION.

The link above is a work in progress . It is the Overture for my first Symphony so to speak.   I started it in 2005. I still intend to add Alembic Series Bass Guitar parts , Female vocals and guitars. In its finished form I intend it to represent a work of   Symphonic Rock.
I am still in the orchestral stages of composition.   There will be three movement after the overture.  ( I hope that live long enough to its completion )

Eventually I intend to add a visual aspect to my composition  in the form of either computer animation or a live theatrical filmed presentation on a stage or movie or even a real opera .

The scene is set from  Viking mythology in the overture in the opening scene:

Freyja , the leader of the the Valkyries is circling a perimeter of a Viking Battle looking for her lost husband shedding  Golden Amber Tears . As she lands on the ground she calls to her troops for assistance.     Hrista , one of the Valkyries  shakes the ground with her strong wings  upon her landing approach during the tuba and arco bass duet.

I have quit a bit of work left here till I fell happy with its completion !

Wolf & Sonicus @ the Alembic Club and Wolf Bostedt in the street !   I send you all my Brotherly Love Friends !

Hi Rusty,    Thanks so much ! Yes , That was already on a hard drive when you came for a visit that time,   I have been using software sample programs and a Kurzweil Midi Board with 88 keys .  I am not  real  piano player with good left and right hand independance . My early clasisical influences and the love for those are shedding a large amount of  power recently ( last 10 years).   in my older years  I need to etablish a final work before it is too late . I feel the drive  for this and other musical projects at this time . I will be anouncing other projects and invitations from other folks to play with them soon . It looks like I will have gig playing with some current members of Quick Silver as well soon . This is what an old bass player wants .  Stay tuned for more info.

The instruments sound amazing & your playing is spot on! I love classical instrumentation! I've got some great sounds in my Pro Tools too, but I am no keyboard player. I have to sequence any part that has more than a few notes! You are inspiring me to dust off my MIDI keyboard & start recording! Keep up the great work!

Rusty, Thanks !
You can do it too if I kind of can .

I am not a real keyboard /piano player in that I have not developed good right and left hand independence. I am definitely not a piano player per se. When I was eight years old I had piano lessons until I was ten and then I switched to the Trumpet lessons. I picked up playing Bass when I was fourteen . Piano lessons only gave me a first exposure to basics but because of physical problems with my left hand I did not stay with the piano.  I did however have plenty exposure to hearing plenty classical music  at home as a child. I have a deep love for much of it and some exposure to playing it on Brass instruments and a tiny bit on Double Bass. A digital sample interface masks my shortcomings and promotes my melodic mentation . I think I have learned different aspects from a few different composers listening and reflecting.

Finally got a chance to listen to your links.

Incredible range of diversity - !

Really liked the Anyway You Want It vid - refreshingly clever, excellent editing.

And, your overture does sound like the soundtrack to a film or theatrical presentation that hasn't yet been developed. I closed my eyes and imagined forests, mountains and ominous dark skies - so you're successfully painting with sound!

Bravo!

Hi friends !
When I started this thread near the middle of this year in May it was with Youtube links of a new musical experiment of a JAM that revealed interesting potential and chemistry in my opinion. Those experiments have continued over the last few months and the result is a NEW BAND with some personnel changes in the process .  Here is a recent post on Youtube.  I am playing my  Alembic Series I ; 81-1940 in this link. The lead guitarist is playing an Alembic Further guitar. We love the Alembic sound !

Our new band is called  EASY WIND. We already have a few gigs booked !  Our next gig will be at the BISTRO in Hayward , Ca. 1001 B Street 94541  . I will post information regarding a few more gigs soon for September and October . We currently have a website registered and it is up and still under construction.

My gig with  Easy Wind  at the Bistro went quite well on 9/11/15. We are a two ALEMBIC Player band .  Ken the lead guitarist play's an Alembic Further .   I had been planning on playing my Series I for the gig in Stereo. At the last moment I decided to use my Distillate and keep it simple due to the stage size. My Stereo rig consists of four 2x10 cabs powered by A Crest power amp and All Alembic rack .  I used two 2x10  instead and still filled the room  powered by an old  GK800RB.

I have some  shaky video of this gig and also an audio recording from my Zoom H5.I might post that as well .

The next day we had a  large festival daytime gig. The Video for that is much better !
I did not have very much time for set up on stage and sound test ( 30 minutes) so I kept it simple with three 2X10 cabs .

Wolf,
Been enjoying this thread!!
Interesting how your go to Bass is the Distillate.
I totally understand. Ease of use and massive tonality kind of makes it a no brainer in the chaos of a live gig.
Yes your Bass cuts through nicely with Great Tone! Looks like you guys are having a Blast!

Gregory ,
Thanks ! Yes that Distillate never seems to disappoint . I had actually been planing on playing my medium scale 81-1940 for these back to back gigs. We were rehearsing with her a week before the gigs. At the last moment I realized that we would be really tight spaced on the Bistro's stage. As it was I had only about a little safe area to stand before me and the lead guitarist would smash our instruments into each other. I chickened out !  Our drummer's kit took up a bit of stage area as well___.

I will in fact be playing a gig in late October with this band on a huge stage where I will be using a wonderful Alembic Series instrument played through an extensive Stereo rig.   Load in picks seem to be irresistible to show  as a dedication of the devoted labor involved with our musical inclinations  ; ____through thick and thin  ... lol !

Pete , Thanks for your viewing and listening ! That Distillate does seem to show up a bit! She was my first 100% Alembic and yes , always a simple success ._____Chaos , yes . I only had a few hours of rest between gigs after listening to Friday night .  In retrospect I could have played a Series instrument on the outside festival gig on the big stage even with the 30 minute set up and sound test. No worries in hindsight either because we like those big stages and there will be more of them in the near future for the Alembic Series I !  Thanks so  much for all the great feedback . I enjoy sharing this stuff as well .

In that Jack Straw video , I think I am showing what I think are the effects of my eclectic listening , appreciation and influences over the decades.  I think Mr. Lesh and Mr Entwistle are  shaking hands  in what I am  trying do there, or maybe I am deceiving my self in my own perceptions ?    May be not .  Just thinking . Regarding our lead guitarist Ken Younger,  playing the Further , YES !  I agree he his really good ! Him and I play very intuitively with each other , I think him and I work very well together in the JAM BAND formula concepts .

Gregory .
I think that my 73-32 would be nice in this context but I would need to check out the RF-EMI noise scenario first. She has PF-5 electronics, that are fine in most places except one that I know of in a rehearsal studio where I first tried her out .  My last gig was powered by a large commercial generator . I do not know what the RF situation is there.
I do know that the RF noise problem near the Emeryville, CA,mud flats is bad with multiple transmission towers all around on multiple frequencies .

The next large stage that I play on will be 9/27/15 . I might play my Series I 81-1940 for that gig , she has PF-6 electronics that have been quite everywhere.  This gig will have P,G&E line power from the city of Hayward,Ca. I do not know the RF problems there but I do not expect any .

Bill , Yes, just like I did in High School as well .  When I read the flyer I had a little  flash back to my own High School years and how the conductor would reprimand me when I would improvise and play anyway when I was not supposed too !  LOL !!!  ___ Wolf , where is that written on the music  ?__  it actually works ! ___the conductor would stop the band and point at me , sometimes with a smile and sometimes not. He was such a patient kind fellow !

Here is a vid from my last gig on  10/30/15.
I am playing my Series I  Standard Point / medium scale # 81-1940 . I have named this bass Hrista after the Norse Valkyrie . Related to Old Norse Hrista (meaning shake, quake) and therefore meaning the quaking one.

Here is the Youtube vid to my Gig with  Easy Wind at a private party that we played at for the  Alameda Yacht Club . It was an intimate setting. I am playing my Series I Standard Point # 81-1940 again.  The lead players Alembic Further and my Series I Bass shine bright in this vid.   We are getting better at our segues from tune to tune. I think that we are making progress.

Rob, Thanks!
When we showed up for the gig, we all immediately realized how important dynamics would be in their party room. They liked us and promised to get us back for another event. The bass that I am playing does indeed have a distinctive voice all of her own. I think I named her well !

Dave, Thanks! It is indeed a long recording with our various segues.
We are adding more material each week and trying to improve what we are already playing. The extended  Eyes of the World jam with the added changes and the riff  is also fun but not in this recording. I will post that when we perform that changed version at a gig.  Here is an example of that from a Dead show  from 11/11/73 @  The Winterland Arena  I like this show, I actually think I was at this one . I was 17 years old at the time just hanging out and listening, and thinking WOW !

Ah. The medallion threw me off. Well the guitar sounds fantastic in his hands... that intro to the first tune has been in my ear all morning here in the office. =)

You're so right about the (importance of) segue between tunes. Sometimes the most accomplished performer(s) is/are hindered by inability to entertain... it's a different skill set altogether. The band I'm currently in suffers from exactly that condition - the music is fine, even darn good some days. I am actively trying to improve as a frontman, talking *to* the audience rather than just introducing the next tune. It's not natural to me... much harder than playing bass for sure.

You guys sound great!

Funny how some who'd never seem to be frontpeople, are; I am one...when I started my band I didn't even want to be singer and once I started singing (or angry bellowing in my case) it all came rather easily; I've had people who know me say that I'm totally different onstage, and they are not wrong...I wish I knew where it came from as I might be a far better social person if I did; it's probably having a stage and an instrument 'round my neck, and trying to replicate that in public ain't gonna work...oh well...Tony

Hi Gregory,
The stage area is rather shallow there and I was directly in front of a scaled down rig , so I opted for the single pickup Distillate this time. A simple approach this time for this gig .

For that last gig the owner of the venue requested a 1968 theme in part for his  Valentines Day Party . He is a photo journalist/ published photographer  from that era who is now in his 70's .

Cryptical Envelopment> The Other One  seems to keep getting better.  We will also play  Let It Grow  , Viola lee Blues ,   New New Minglewood Blues  and lots  of others . We play from 9PM to Midnight . It is a free show with NO cover charge !

There will be more gigs coming up INCLUDING our booked performance at the Shakedown Street Festival 2016 on  Sunday,  September 18th in Berkeley , California .

Hey Wolf

Hope your gig went well. My wife and I were planning to come by until our plumbing backed up around 9PM that night. We ended up stuck at home waiting for Roto Rooter. It was almost midnight by the time they had finished snaking out the sewer line.

Stephen , It is nice to hear from you .

I know how those plumbing emergencies are . Been there done that !
Our gig went really well .    Cryptical Envelopment> The Other One  was fun as well as all the other older Dead tunes that we do . We also did the EXTENDED  Eyes of the World  with jam ! The extended jam after my Emaj7 bass solo ;

G#m / Emaj7 / G#m /Emaj7 / D#m / D#diminished / Emaj7 / Dm / D#riff / Dm / D#riff / Dm / D#riff /Dm ending
All changes are in 8 bar phrases except D# riff 4 bars and the Dm ending 2 bars .

We also did Let It Grow and took that one out side and jammed on it as well .

It all went over well and was fun and made the listeners happy , and that is important to me .

Rob, thanks.
With this new image of a ship " Full Sail" there is a good  "visual image metaphor" of how we often seem to deliver the music; " A Full Sail Ship ", with a crew on board working together as one , gliding over the waves .

The "Easy Wind " facebook page is now looking better in my opinion . I put some videos on the front page. In the first video I am playing my Series I   81-1940  . _____I made it PUBLIC so you can view content without joining facebook  for the non facebook folks as I was just a few weeks ago ! I just joined and can see the benefits from the view point of music and band  promotion and networking with other serious musicians seeking to gig.

Love the video of "Tennessee Jed" Wolf... next time they record it though, turn around toward the camera so I can see your intro. ;D

You guys sound great. I will share with the fellas I'm gigging with tomorrow, as they are all 3rd generation Deadheads. The last tune they pitched me to learn was "Women Are Smarter"... you guys ever cover that one?

David ; Yes,  Our Drummer made that know when he saw the flyer . The next gig was suddenly made available to us due to a cancelation of a touring act group . The flyer was  quickly made made by a friend of the band in an act of brevity to help us advertise and she only a few shots of us from the previous gig .  She acted with kindness as a gift to us . The music actually starts at 9PM , not 8PM as well . :)

Here's a picture - with the drummer! I've never been to downtown Hayward at night before, the area was hopping! Lots of kids playing Pokemon Go, lots of families, and Dead music wafting out into the air! A pleasant surprise was getting to hang with stephenr and his wife - so it was kind of a mini-Gathering, though never managed to get a picture of Stephen, Wolf & me - next time!

My wife and I had a good time checking out Wolf's band last night and getting the unexpected surprise of running into Harry and his wife, too. While it is always enjoyable to do the virtual hang thing via the online club its value as a way to build community really reveals itself when we get a chance to meet up in person. More mini-gatherings!

Gregory , I sometimes decide what instrument to play by what I think is the one to take for various reasons . Knowledge or experience of the room , If there is a back line or my own rig, If I have time to dial in my sound, Also reasons that are just in the moment and not bad decisions but are just convenient decisions . Sometimes I might also just grab my bass and run with it and not out of any logical process but because it is just there in front of me without intentional deliberation.   However if I intend to play many bass chords /double or triple stops I might grab a shorter scale instrument.  My choices vary . :) I feel lucky and grateful .

Tomorrow on  11/5/16 , I will be playing in " Easy Wind " @ ;

Hayward , CA. 94541

The music starts at 9PM   ,

It will be the first gig with our new drummer . I will also most likely be playing my new to me Essence that I purchased from lbpesq . I just picked it up at the Alembic factory mothership after they installed a brass bridge block , the Essence dual preamp pan module  and a 3 position Q switch . I love it . I really like how I can now get more gain from the bridge pickup . It's awesome ! I also had a nice visit and chat with Mica and Susan . It is always fun to visit and say hello :)  .

Looking good Wolf. ;)

If you don't mind the asking, how much did the sustain block affect the sound of your new-to-you Essence ? I hadn't thought that much about them, but after playing my Distillate some, I began to realize the implications of that extra few ounces of brass countersunk into that neck beam. Just don't have anything to compare it with. (yet) ;)
Title: Re: Sonicus Projects , Current And Past.
Post by: sonicus on November 08, 2016, 12:18:33 AM
Hello  Gregory ,

I have always been a fan of the sound difference of the brass sustain block ever since I had the Alembic bridge and sustain block installed on my remaining Guild Starfire back in 1975. I noticed a difference then on that instrument and I have noticed a difference this time on my Essence . I completely feel and hear more sustain and an improvement of the tone to my ears . I also experienced  an intensified visceral aspect of the instrument in terms of punch . I like the difference .This instrument was improved to my taste  and my playing enjoyment and as what I feel happy about as representation of my sound as a Bassist . I also highly recommend the "Essence dual preamp pan module " that was installed in this Essence and the 3 position Q- switch. Collectively the upgrades that were done have all made this instrument even more stellar then before the work was done . I am happy with the results . Everyone at my last gig noticed and complemented my sound .
The added weight is not an issue for me since this is already the least heavy of any of my bass guitars . It is entirely swell :) !
Title: Re: Sonicus Projects , Current And Past.
Post by: edwardofhuncote on November 08, 2016, 07:21:41 AM
Thanks Wolf, that's kinda' what I was thinking. ;)

Your Essence is basically wired up like my Mica sent the new components for my Persuader a couple years ago, Vol./Pan/Filt./3-pos.Q... sans sustain block of course.

Glad the new drummer is working out... that sure makes the evening go by. ;D
Title: Re: Sonicus Projects , Current And Past.
Post by: sonicus on November 08, 2016, 11:10:03 AM
On my Essence I now also now have the new dual preamp pan module that now has two trim pots . One per pickup . That makes a big difference then the previous single trim pot that was shared to both pickups that was originally in my bass of 1992 vintage . :)  The new drummer has a good___" less is sometimes more cognizance" . We are exploring more harmonically and melodically as a result it seems . All good .

I I had  a fun gig playing bass in a band project called "Turpentine Remedy " at the Richmond Heights Art & Music Festival on 7/16/17 .I played my Walnut Top Essence Bass with the added brass bridge block a 3 position cue switch . I played through the " backline " offered bass amp that was a classic Ampeg SVT top and 4X10 speaker cab. I really did not have time to really dial in my sound to my true taste but folks out in front thought it was ok ;) .I might do some post production EQ and the such when I have time  .  Here is an ambient raw recording recording of the gig on SoundCloud ;      https://soundcloud.com/sonicus-alembicus/turpentine-remedy-71617-richmond-heights-artmusic-festival

Hello friends ! On 8//4/17 I played  Bass at a reunion celebration for the original "Princess No.109" Light Show company that used to do the Winterland and Fillmore Auditorium light shows  for Bill Graham back in the day  . A past rhythm Guitar player from Dead Guise booked the gig along with a past drummer so they are playing instead of the current Guise . My self , the lead guitarist and the current keyboard player are also in this lineup . Here is a video with us and the Light Show :) .

Your upgraded Essence is sounding fantastic Wolf... very close to your old Distillate.  ;D

I'll listen to this set in its entirety for work Monday. (I find data entry less mind-numbing when there's music to listen to... :) )

I wonder- do you ever bring a backup Alembic?

Here is a track that I uploaded to my Soundcloud page from our Dead Guise 7/13/18 Bistro show .
St. Stephen >The Eleven> Drums& Space> Morning Dew

We had a good turnout of rambunctious patrons at thia show . A full house for the most part .
On our 8/10/18 Turf Club we had a huge turnout of folks . The venue was full .  The tune that plays automatically after this one is from the Turf Club gig ; Viola Lee Blues 1966 .
The dancers loved that one . There was a full dance floor of dancers including about 25 Line Dancers in front of the stage , with at least  50 total dancing and another possible 100 or so folks all about . It was a really fun gig with a great sound system and sound man & light show . Videos will follow at some point  from this show .

You 'Guise' sound Grate, Wolf.  ;)

I listened over on the Listening Thread... is this your 'Aurora Borealis' Essence bass again? The tone reminds me so much of your old single pickup Distillate. I suppose it's the player I'm hearing rather than the instrument. Well done!

Thanks so much Gregory ! This time it is actually my all Maple 91 Essence . Aurora Borealis is a 92 . The strings were a bit dead however the intonation seemed in check .  They had a nice snap to them as far as tension as well :)

Variations and incarnations of  this band have existed in Alameda County, CA. since the early 1990s . This will the first incarnation without the founding member and lead guitarist . He gave me his blessings just as long as we had a name change to carry on . My self and two former members shall carry the torch locally ,to attempt to provide a reasonable facsimile of a live Grateful Dead experience . In a conversation that i had with our new lead guitarist , he and I concur on the importance of artfully magical segues between tunes as well of the cognizance and awareness of the Garcia and Lesh  interplay chemistry and reciprocal roles on melody ,counter melody and counterpoint , much of which is the fruition of partial serendipity and previous rehearsal activity . I look forward to this .

Formations is the 6th track on the 5th ISON Album,  called "SPARKS and EMBERS". I wrote the lyrics for Formations. It is quite certainly on the link that I posted . (click on show more ) :)  Open the link to YouTube and you will see it . The track is 40:08 long
ISON is a band based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Today was the Listening Party release on YouTube for the entire album.
Feed back from both band members and the record label was that my lyrics and the track" Formations" were a success :)
It looks possible that my collaboration with these folks could continue to grow for future releases.

Hello Paul .
Thanks for checking it out. Lisa the lead singer has heard my bass playing and has been very complementary of it, and she is an accomplished keyboardist as well. Daniel is also a guitarist and has been a bassist in the Swedish band called Draconian. As well, he is the MOOG SYNTH master of ISON . Lisa and I have had communications about our instrumental collaborations as well. Just to mention, she has also been a singer in Draconian. As well, she has offered to sing the female vocal parts on some of my own projects in the future.
She has sung an amazing version of the Bonnie Dobson tune called" MORNING DEW" whilst accompanying her self on piano for me per request on her live stream on https://www.twitch.tv/  lisacuthbertlive  ,that the Grateful Dead so famously covered. She looped her own voice in three part harmony on that live ! I have heard her do that several times .
The future looks bright .
