The November 08 issue of the German Gitarre und Bass magazine has a showcase (http://www1.gitarrebass.de/magazine/index.php?ID=200811302 target=_blank) on that wonderful Japanese-built bolt-on headless violin-shaped Alembic of the early 1980s.
Features that were new to me: it has a single ebony laminate in the neck, the bridge saddles and part of the bridge/anchor are made from wood, and the fretboard clears the E string above the 20th fret - for a better slap sound.
Apparently the string locking at the far end of the neck is a bit tricky.
