Hi gang,
I don't want to be rude in these jolly Alembic pages but I came to a point that -finally- I could realize another dream of me: buying a second hand Yamaha TRB 6P I (the model with the single coil PU discontinued since 1996).
So NOT the TRB 6P II (actual model)
NOT the TRB 6JP
NOT the TRB 6.
This model
(http://club.alembic.com/Images/395/45484.jpg)
I know I can reach a quite wide range of bass-lovers here.
I cannot believe my dark days are almost over so ...please ...a little from my friends?
Thanks.

I don't own one anymore, but I second the notion that these (the TRB6P original) were one of the best 6 string bass designs ever, along with Ken Smith. Keep an eye on Ebay and be patient, they do show up.
Andy
-
I agree, I have a 4p, a 5p, and a 6p which was converted to fretless. All are neck throughs. I have owned the 4p-II and have a 1005 and they are not nearly as good. The bass player for Earth Wind and Fire uses a 4P. These seem to run around $1000 used. There were single and dual truss rod models, I think.
Dave
-
Yes,
the first run was siongle truss-rod.
The second run was dual truss-rod.
I have an offer for 1500? (about 2100$) here in BElgium for a NON-mint first run.
E-bay? I have been watching out for these basses for about 4 years having NOT the ability to buy. Now I CAN buy (for a reasonable price) but E-bay ...Well ...I don't trust it anymore. And ...to be honest ...they don't pop up very frequently except in Malaysian Scam situations.
Allright.
Be patient.
After 4 years I can take another 2 I guess.
THanks for sharing friends!

Paul:
As a good friend (suddenly I can't seem to remember his name, some musician guy I think) is fond of saying: There will always be another. hehehehe
Bill, tgo
-
Brother Bill,
I KNEW you were going to say that!
Hehehehe
But it would be nice to keep your eyes open too: in shops or so!
You never know

Brother Paul:
My peepers shall be set on scan.

Paul,
Not an exact match, but there's a TRB on http://www.marktplaats.nl/ (http://www.marktplaats.nl/), seller lives up north in Groningen, posted October 14.
Problems: it's a 5 string with PJ pickups, but it is a neck-through, with a single truss rod, and it has the piezo. The colour is see-through dark green, which you may or may not like.
-
Adriaan,
hoe is het mijn vriend!
Yes ..the TRB-5P's pop up regularly.
Unfortunately I don't see a decent way to botch together a 6 string from those fivers.
BTW: those PU's are FABULOUS ...blieve me!
Paul the bad one
PS: for one or another reason they pop up more regularly in the south of Europe: France, Spain, Italy, Turky (mmm ...that's not Europe yet).
Weird huh?

Rats.
I just tried to post a looking for at E-bay but it didn't work: I have not enough stars and I don't have a credit card!
***sigh***
Oh well.
Those who have a lot already, will have still more and more.
In economics they call it the Mattheus-effect.
MMmmmm ...I have been there before.

These basses aren't really that popular. I bought my last one after it had been on the local craigslist for a couple of months. You will find one! They are great. The six string has a wonderful slim wide neck.
Dave

I am watching ...oh-oh ..I AM watching -VEEEERY watching ...(how watching can you get).
More eyes see more of course!
Thanks Dave!

Well: again there is one popped up!

In CARDIFF!
Since I am not a E-bay specialist I cannot judge the value. But seen the -very vague- picture it is the model I am looking for (first model serie 2).
Ins't a member of this jolly club liviong in the neighbourhood of Cardiff/Wales?
That would be something!

Paul: That picture is troubling. You should Email for better pix showing the whole bass. The other thought for finding what you are looking for (may be complicated by international issues) is to put out Want to Buy ads on Talkbass http://www.talkbass.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=11 (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=11); The Ugly Bass Player http://www.uglybassplayer.com/forum/ (http://www.uglybassplayer.com/forum/); The Dudepit http://thedudepit.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=5.0 and maybe other similar forums on your side.
I've done this a couple of times when I thought I was looking for a needle in a haystack - only to receive an Email with exactly what I was looking for a day or two after I first posted. When a bass is rare, you are much more likely to find someone who is not actively selling but would let it go for a reasonable price. Most recently, I found an Ampeg AMB1 in less than 48 hours - after searching diligently for months looking for one that was already posted. Ultimately, I sold that bass just a few weeks later (at a profit, no less) to help fund my new Brown Bass.
Good Luck.
Bill

Hi Brother Bill!
THanks for the advice!
I'll checj those ways out! REALLY! Never thought about that one!
The pictures question (yes ...asking for pictures ...how could I forget that one ...I invented the concept on that one hehehehe) I'll do too!
I am now waiting if the guy wants to talk to me. I still have no reaction on my first mail. If he want to accept me as a human being -ok ...Belgium is outer space for him definitely- than I'll ask for more pictures. Although seen the rest of the stuff he's selling he is rather NOT in guitars leaving there basses.
I send a message to brother Roger if he could help.
To be continued!
Thanks again!

Hi Bill,
I did registred at Talkbass but to have access to wanted you have to be supporting (=paying) member. Since I cannot have plastic yet this is impossible for me!
Thanks anyway!
I posted already there something!
Let's go further on this quest!

The Nashville guitar Center has one for $1200 US.
http://used.guitarcenter.com/usedgear/details.cfm?listId=104431184 (http://used.guitarcenter.com/usedgear/details.cfm?listId=104431184)

Paul,
FYI- if you look at the one linked above from guitar center, the prices (new/used) are VERY flexible. That price should only be the start of negotiations. The sales staff at most GC locations tends to be fairly inexperienced and turns over frequently. It's not unusual to hear of incredible steals on used gear at GC- simply because the sales team/manager didn't really know what they were dealing with.
Either way- looks as though the Yamaha isn't one of those 'steals', but I've always had great luck negotiating used gear at my local GC.

There is a similar bass at American Guitar & Band
13777 Grove Drive North
Maple Grove, MN 55311
763.424.4888
info@americanguitarandband (mailto:info@americanguitarandband)
The control layout & everything else looks the same, but I don't know enough to tell if it's exactly what you're looking for. Next through, some significant dings. I think they wanted $1200 for it.

It;s now on ebay:

Congratulations Paul! Keep us posted.
-
Well ...it IS REAL!
The friendly people at MBE (a packaging service) in Cardiff just gave me the news that there is a bass in their shop with my name on it!
HA!
Now ...get the thing ovehee!
Still a tricky thing to do!
Paul the bad one
Ok ...I can hear the words humming picturessss-picturesssss-p?cturesss and hear the banging of empty bottles on full tables!
I'll do - I have other things to post too!
Maybe I should make a new family picture???
-
Congrats Paul. Looks like a nice one, but, as they say: No pictures, no bass...
Hope you enjoy it. Actually, I can't imagine how you guys handle 6 strings. I have enough trouble with 4 and maaaayyybe 5. And let's see, I've only got 4 or 5 fingers (wait - I'll check) on each hand...
Bill
-
How I will handle this six-string?
Like the others -fourers and fivers- I guess: with a lot of difficulties!
Yep!
Paul the bad one
BTW: I got some very-very bad-bad-bad pictures of the bass (due to a good willing but clumsy photographer).
The color of the bass is in ...hold your breath ...burst magenta!!!!
MAGENTA for crying out loud!!
My first colored bass, even my first colored guitar in general.
Now THAT's a milestone.
Mmmmmm...should I confess Bill TGO that I bought a six-string guitar too! You know ...those smaller thiongs with the thin strings who goes twaing-twaing or skreeeee-iiieeeek in your ears!

Paul:
You mean you're becoming a musician???!!!!!!! lol!
Congrats on the new Yamaha. Can you hear the banging beer bottle from California? Pictures, man, pictures!
Bill, tgo
-
Way cool! They have wide string spacing, but it's still a challenge to me to play them unless I practice up a lot. It's hard to see the strings and I am a visual player a lot of the time. Some folks have to make the jump without ever going back to the 4 strings just to stay proficient.
Dave
-
Yie-iehaaaa
Hang-on-hang-on you guys.
The bass ...well they are preparing the shipment now.
Bill tgo ...THAT's a GOOD ONE!!!!
Well... I played bass since I was 15. I bought my acoustic Yamaha FG 580 when I was 20 so that lady is 32 years old and the best souding acoustic you could imagine!!! There have been reviews of (enthousiastic) users on Harmony Central but it seems to have gone. I posted too!
About the electric: it's a Londoncity Comet T. A thinline (semi-hollowbody) telecaster copy completely maple.
ok-ok ...I know ...I said I KNOW ...pictures huh???
The name Londoncity sounds weird huh? It's a DUTCH brand of amplifiers back from the 7ties. They were in the Hiwatt/Marshall style. The son of the owner restarted the brand and started designing guitars too. The guitars are made/assembled in China.
Also on Harmonycentral you can read positive feedback: they are very well made! Popular on this side of the pond!

Paul,
You look like you're sleeping on the job again.
Congrats on the bass. Looks very nice.
-
That looks like a great bass! Congratulations! I love the notes on these things, they are so powerful. I stick a little booklight on the end of the neck on my 6P to see it better on stage (It's been converted to fretless).
Dave
-
Hi Dave!!!!
Hi Bradley!
NOOOOOO I am not alseep. But I seem to be carried away by the notes the thin-striong people (see Bill TGO) play!!!!
But ...I can answer: okay ...you trapped me, I played bass asleep in my former life! So ...wanna see what's going to be when I'll be awake in the next 10 years???
JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dave ...I really think these basses would sound GREAT fretless but for one or another reason I'll keep my fretlesses the Rob Allen MB-2 5 string and G-bass (formerly called Broomstick)
We'll see!
Thanks for comments guys!
I'll dig more into details of my basses later: other place, other time!
Yoooodely-haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
Paul the still bad one
(oooooooooooooooooooooooooooh I am bad)
-
My old bass teacher bought one of these brand new($2100.00 U.S.$) and immediately had the frets removed, filled and oiled the board. He did'nt like the fretted sound as there was'nt a deep low end to it. He claimed that removing the frets made it sound better, less clacky.
But your soooooo bad Paul I doubt you'll need to do that! hahaha
Enjoy it!
-
Mmmmm ....there IS something to say however for replacing the frets by mandoline frets, the very-very thin ones. That's the Lee Sklar way to play these basses (he played them once -still do I guess- but you see him mostly with the Dingwall nowadays).
There is a member on the club who has these kind of frets on his 6 string I guess see here http://www.alembic.com/info/fc_lionsroar.html (http://www.alembic.com/info/fc_lionsroar.html)
It seems that it gives the sound more wood and deepness.
-
BTW, this guy is also playing one:
