Title: Any 1974's out there?
Post by: samophlange on May 13, 2009, 05:45:44 AM
My newest obsession is looking for an Alembic from 1974. (Since it's my birth year!) Anyone out there that has seen one for sale, any info would be great!

Hi Robert; welcome to the board!  There aren't a lot of '74s out there, so patience will be required.

I have to admit that I don't own an Alembic...yet...
I'm a big fan of them, but coming up with that kind of $$ nowadays seems to be quite the challenge. I figured that I'll either save up for a custom 4 string or find the '74 that catches my eye if it ever comes available.

I've had my trusty Pedulla for about 16 or so years, and a few other odd ball basses. One is a wishbass 6-string series 2 body style copy that I jammed 6 hipshot detuners onto the head, and a Musicvox 12-string. No detuners on the 12-string.

Hello Roibert, You wouldn't by any chance have listened to or seen Michael Manring in the past, would you?

(I love his stuff)

MIght I add that  I have seen Michael Manring  numerous times.  I met him when i took one of his Bass techniques clinics along time ago(more then a decade}. I remember inquiring about the string tension on his ZON HYPERBASS and he answered me by handing me the instrument.I can say that he was most definitely an influence on me ,he is  an incredible human being as well.

Since I already had the 6 string fretless and its not a particularly expensive instrument, it was ideal to play around with and install all the tuners. I figured that it would be cheaper than getting a hyperbass. Some of Manring's tunings seem to be pretty high on the top string, so I wasn't sure what he was using for string gague. Having the six string with that high C definitely gives me some options that approximate what I've heard on his recordings. Now, I just need to figure out what to do with all of the options. I do like being able to double some of the open strings (two g's and d's). It goves it a bit of that Celtic/ Zeppelin sound that can be especially fun with harmonics.  By the way, if anyone is interested in installing alot of these tuners on a bass not designed for it, prepare for some hamemring and cutting. The lever systems are great, but require enough clearance to release the tension on the string, while not striking the tuner below. It was a fun little project!  Here's a couple pictures of my poor man's Alembic(It's a series none...) with it's tuning nightmare on top.

Sam,
I'm guessing that you saw this 1975 is up for auction here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Alembic-Series-1-short-scale-Stanley-Clarke_W0QQitemZ160335517894 target=_blank)

It's being sold by a club member...discussed here (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=14583) in the for sale section.
