Title: Need More Epic info
Post by: bstringbruce on July 25, 2011, 05:09:40 AM
I very recently bought a mint condition Epic 5 converted fretless.

I noticed the neck woods look different on this Epic compared to every other one I have seen.

Usually the 5 laminate woods are of very similar color, but this Epic, they are very different!?!

Please view picture.  I don't see this as an option for the Epic.

Any input appreciated.

Thanks, Bruce(http://club.alembic.com/Images/395/109796.jpg)

Definitely doesn't look like your standard Epic neck.  It's normally all maple with very thin walnut veneers.  Looks like you have maple and....?  I would guess mahogany (?)  if you can get a closer picture of the grain on the wood in question I bet some here might be able to ID it for you.

Well, the thin walnut veneers became standard issue on all-maple necks a little later than 1995, so that part of the neck recipe is to spec. The laminates have different grain orientations, normally, so you can expect a certain difference in the colours - but it would appear there might be two laminates of a different species of wood there. Can you post close-ups of the neck?

Close-ups are good.  Looks like cherry from here.

Here is another picture.

I have requested a build order for this bass through this website.

Have never seen this neck on an Epic.

As you know, there is no option for this, so how did it come to be is the question?

Thanks to all for your thoughts, Bruce(http://club.alembic.com/Images/395/109848.jpg)

After more searching around, I am beginning to think this is white maple and chocolate maple, but still don't know why it is like this.
