I prefer compressed round wounds.  I like Labella, GHS, and RotoSounds (I cannot tell them apart sonically so I buy whichever is available)

I play a passive, long scale fretless

I recently switched from GHS Pressure Wound strings on my fretless to Chromes.  Mostly it was for feel and the GHS strings were marking up the fingerboard a little.  The Chromes sound a bit fatter and I was happy that they still have some nice brightness.  I decided to put them on all my basses.

WOW you got a nice bass!!!

I really like the Thomastik-Infeld jazz flats for fretless.  They're just buttery goodness.

I like 'em so much, I even use them on my fretted bass .

I have DR red devils on my Rogue. I love the feel and sound and so far (nearly 4 years on) I've not noticed any significant wear to the fingerboard. I find they give a really good Mwah when the bass is set up well and they tend to stay in tune throughout a gig.
I have LaBella deep talkin flats on my Michael kelly dragonfly and they have a beautiful woody tone and a really smooth feel.

I use D'Addario Chromes and have been happy with them. They are reasonably priced and have a very bright sound for a flat wound string.

I have used roundwounds extensively on my fretless basses over the years and have only noted minimal fingerboard wear (Ebony is extremely hardwearing)- I just like the sound from rounds period! I used Labellas up until recently but have just started trying out the D'addario brand.

Both brands sound great to me.

The last six months I had Elixier Nanowebs on my Orion-5 fretless (ebony fretboard). The Sound is balanced but I am still missing something more acoustic sounding. Last week I tried Rotosound RS55 Pressure Wounds. They have bit more highs and a bit less mids which I like better, but I will probably try other sets as well. Any suggestions ?

I've been a TI Jazz Flats guy for 4 years now on my fretless Epic.

I use Rotosounds on my Alembic. I use Chromes on some of my other basses, but they sound a little too milky on the Elan.

Did someyone try black Nylons on Alembic fretless ? They claim a more acoustic-alike sound, true ?

I have used the black nylon strings on a fretless jazz-style bass with a Modulus neck. After testing this bass with both roundwounds and with nickel flats, I find the nylon strings to have a more pleasing sound, more of the mwah effect.

Thanks Guys,

Always the antithesis of a dearth of information is had within these electronic confines.

I might give the black nylon strings a try.

I have a chance at some Maxima Gold anybody hear these?

There have been comments about Maxima Gold on the club, please Google on maxima gold site:alembic.com.

From what I remember, they're now made under the name Optima Gold.
