Title: How much is my Hyak Guitar worth
Post by: breeze on June 26, 2009, 07:26:10 AM
I have a late seventies Hyak Guitar that I am interested in selling. It is in great shape but has a few minor dings on the back and heel and one on the upper cutaway. I have an interested buyer from this forum and I would like some help in setting a price. I am not greedy, but I want to be fair. Please help. Thanks, Breeze

And I'm the interested buyer.   It's not one of the scroll Hyaks, but it's still cool, don'tcha think?

Hey Bill, I am about to play it for probably the last time to check everything out and make sure all is good. I have not heard it thru an amp in several years. This is gonna be fun!

As I was looking at the pictures, I was planning to post And I bet it's Bill - then I scrolled down.  That's a gorgeous guitar.

Wow!! All is well. That was fun. I checked everything out - power supply, 6 pin XLR cable, guitar electronics - all good. This guitar plays great! The Bridge P/U has a cool vintage humbucker sound and the Neck P/U has a split coil sound that is real sweet. Anybody have any ideas on a price? thanks,
Breeze

It's one of those things that are priceless or worthless.  There is just not enough of them around to have a 'market'.  I think it is all in what someone is willing to pay.  I am not sure about the guitars, but I have owned several of their basses.  I've seen the basses sell for as much as $3800.00.  BUT honestly of all the Hyak basses I've had, (5 of them) I paid between $800 to $1200.

Bill, you're gonna love it.  I have been looking for one of the no scroll basses since the late 70's.  I have only seen 1.  It seems that the no scroll is much less common.

Looking at the pictures of this guitar, it seems that there is some finish checking on the electronics cover.  I have found that this is consistent with the Hyaks I've had too!  I think the finish on the plates is different than on the instruments.  Lacquer perhaps?

Very nice Breeze!
Wecome to the forum. I've never seen an original power supply (I built the one for my bass).  Would you mind posting some pictures of the power supply?
Thanks,
Art

There were two types of power supplies for the Hyaks.  One was a blue and white box that was quite crude and rectangular shaped.  The other was a brown aluminum squareish box with a sticker on the top.  The sticker did not say Hyak, but something like Advanced Composites, and had their contact information. They didn't call the box a power supply, but it was known as a Summer.  I guess because it summed the 2 signals.

I had one of the brown ones until just a few weeks ago.  I sent it to someone that needed it more than I did.  I use my IN-2 for my Hyak.  I should have taken some pics!

The Hyak power supplies (summers) had male 5-pin connectors on them instead of the female connecors like on the Alembic supplies.  Therefore the cable for the instruments were female on both end.  Perhaps that was to discourage using that power supply with an Alembic?

I use the Alembic power supplies with my Hyak with no problems.  But I would strongly advise not using the Hyak power supply with an Alembic!  It has twice the output voltage.

Hi Michael,
Yes I recall that you said to not plug in a Hyak power supply into an Alembic to me quite some time ago... I now have a DS5R and the one that I built for my Hyak.  Enjoying the basses for sure!
Best,
Art

Hello,

I am the owner of Hyak guitar.
I bought it Dec. 2005 at Tokyo, the price was $1600 without power supply and hard case.
But it was included NEW DS-5R and 5pin Cable.
Because the guitar price was around $1000 at the time.

Last year I took the picture of Hyak's power supply.
The shop had Hyak bass with P.S. and Case.
But the first price was $6000 !
Then they offered $3000 because circuit trouble.
Here is the pict. of P.S.
It has male 5 pin connector that pointed out by Michael.

The Power Supply that I have was built by the music store Tech when I bought it in '82. It is not the Hyak original supply. I didn't count the pins, I guess it is 5.I always new the cable as being a Moog Liberation cable. When I bought the Hyak, The music store owner told me they had sold one to Howard Leeds of Heart.

The Hyak arrived today.  The Fedex guy brought it during our moving/garage sale.  It's absolutely gorgeous and in excellent condition (better condition than I was in at its age).  I'll be checking it out, plugging her in, and having FUN over the next few days, in between traveling to L.A. on business and dealing with the (seemingly) never-ending move.

Dave:

We're just moving a few miles away to Alameda.  My boy starts High School in the fall and Alameda High is a much better school than the one in the district in which we live.  As a bonus, the new house has a finished basement that has studio written all over it!  I'll still be a stone's throw from the mothership.

I think that could be arranged ... especially if you don't mind sharing with a bunch of guitars!  lol
