Title: Top Hat Knobs...
Post by: hendixclarke on May 07, 2009, 09:35:55 PM
Does anyone know a company that offers Brown (not black) Top Hat knobs?

I want to upgrade my vintage Series I (Maple/Mahogany/Maple) shorty with brown knobs that look like the black ones.

Take a look at http://www.thgknobs.com/ (http://www.thgknobs.com/) -

If you go to Products-> Control Knobs-> Custom you'll see the Alembic Hat in the bottom left corner.  Not cheap, but certainly very pretty!

Here are the ones on my S-2. They were made by THG.

I can second this. Roger made some beautiful Yin&Yang Knobs for my bass. Excellent work!

(3 Words) I WANT THEM...

I want to replace my 30+ year old knobs, on my 76'er

Are they wooden, plastic what?

They are custom-made wood.  Tell Roger what you want in terms of wood type, color and grain.  It helps if you also send him a pic of your instrument.  If you poke around, you'll see he has done multi-piece designs and even knobs with LEDs on top.

If you do replace your knobs, put the old ones in a zip-lock and keep them with the bass!  Some purists greatly prefer the originals over fancy replacements and a future owner might be grateful.

The ones above are Walnut. I have them on all of my Alembics and they are all wood.

Here is the last set he made for me.

Here are two more sets I have. I also have a set on my Burl maple bass but can't find a photo of them.

Those are NICE!

Can he do LED with the top hats?

I don't think so. The LED's are powered bya watch battery and there isn't enough room in a Hat style.
The LED's are cool but honestly, I've used them one time while actually playing. All the other times I forget to turn them on.

On the Toma-Hawk the 3 tear drop knobs would look cool with say maybe a arrow head shape to them. (JUst thinking out loud)

Those knobs looks so shiny, they look synthetic.
When I saw your first picture, I thought those caramel colored knobs were plastic.

Plastic/Wood -- I didn't care, I want them on my 76. I am looking for that Caramel colored ones, just like those I see from your first picture.

About how much does (4) knobs -- of that make and model, cost?

As for the teardrop selector switch, I like it black. My bass already looks like a round caramel apple, so with the knobs contrasting, it makes the shape shape interesting, and almost make me say yummy.

As for the Toma_Hawk (presently in the wood shop department at Alembic) will have a Red/orange Vermilion body, and a natural neck with pinstripes laminate -- giving the look of an old formula 1 car, rolling through Monaco.

The shape is pushing a primitive arrow dynamic dimensions, like an arrow or a mallet thus the name -- Toma_Hawk.

Although, I like your idea Olie, and your basses look like something I would do in similar form, however, I don't think I will make any changes to the Toma_Hawk.

For the most part, I love Alembic Black plastic Top hats on my basses. It just, my 76er knobs are showing age and I was considering replacing them, or having the same style with another color.

Your models are fantastic and I'm leaning towards those beautiful caramel colored ones. Can you display more pictures of the first caption, I want to take those knobs and edit them on my 76'er, then I will show everyone here and get your feedback... thanks man.

Hi Hal, Roger of THG made me Blue LED knobs for my Europa. I wanted a tapered Hat knob, and he was able to make a compromise: a mild taper.

Fiber optics on the knobs would be a way to bypass the LED's and make the whole integration between the controls for the neck and nobs work as one. I am sure someone with more time on their hands, will study this.

A bass with a fiber optics, signal processor...

My new Alembic, will have blue lights on the neck. I love blue lights more than all the other colors.

Thanks for sharing.

Ok, so does each knob have it's own little LED on/off switch? I just have this image of Olie with this jewelers screwdriver looking for this tiny little switch on the side of the knobs while on the dark stage.

That was funny. That is a good point though.

That's just one more thing you need to check before going live on stage.

Have some spares battery inside, or somehow tap into that active nine volt battery as a backup. If I got lit knobs, that would been something I would address.

Altgrendel; if I recall correctly, the top portion of the knob twists to turn the LED on and off.

Actually Altgrednel is close. There is a set scew on the side that you use an allen wrench to turn the led on. BUT Dave is also correct in that you can just twist the top a little (it will unscrew completely. that's how you change the battery) and turn the light off too. I don't think this was Rogers intention but it is easier to turn the lights on and off.

For the Record,
Roger changed the design a few times while developing my set. My knobs do not have the set screw on the side to turn the lites on or off. The only way is to turn the cap. Each blue LED requires 2 small watch batteries per knob.
