Im looking for a nice four string, slightly small budget, trying not to spend over $1800. Any help is greatly appreciated.
-
Look for Taylor and his persuader 4 string. Great bass, Great guy. Tmoney61092 is what he goes by on here.

Not too knowledgable about the epic, does it compare with a spoiler?
-
Epics are interesting basses. They are set neck and some people really like that. It's a matter of choice, of course. I like the neck throughs, but some people think the set necks are a little punchier.
I believe that Spoilers and Persuaders are more similar to each other than either are to the Epic. I would judge those one their specific qualities as it might be difficult to make generalizations about them. The big difference that I can see are the pickup shapes with the Persuader having P and J shaped pickups. If it were me, I'd probably go for the Spoiler, but if the Persuader had woods I was really into, I might go for that, instead. I doubt you could go wrong.
-
Another major difference is in the electronics. The Spoiler has a separate preamp per pickup, so you can set the pickup height to where you like the sound the best and then level out the output from each pickup, while on the Epic you'll have to find the middle ground between pickup height and balance. On the other hand, the Epic has a pickup blend, rather than the pickup switch on the Spoiler (which can be replaced by a blend).
And finally of course the Epic has bass and treble boost/cut controls, as opposed to the filter + Q switch on the Spoiler.

How does the q switch differ?

Here's a pretty good testimony to how good an Epic is to play.

I've never played one but I'm sure they're nice. I have a Rogue and an Elan - they are very different but neither is nicer than the other. Almost everything about them is different, including the body woods, frets vs fretless, and electronic packages.
Can't seem to go wrong with any of them.
But, I strongly feel that one that is properly set up with the right strings for your sound / style will be tons better than one that isn't set up right. I recently played a Series bass that sounded no better than a well set up MIM Jazz. It was kind of sad. The shop should have at least put new strings on it. The neck felt good, but it was all wrong - dead strings that were slipping on the tuners - shame.
Good luck in your quest!
Stephen
PS This is kind of like a married person setting up someone for a date LOL

Well it turns out the spoiler I was looking at wasnt legit.

I tried contacting the guy with the epic with no answer, such a nice bass

Hey there, I've got an Epic that I'm selling (I'm in Chicago). Feel free to contact me via my email linked to my account.

Jeff:
Unless you have a lot of cash available and/or are willing to be patient and wait for the right deal, you might want to take a look at some of the Epics that are currently up for sale on CL and Ebay (see below). The large majority of Spoilers that I have seen in the last 6-12 months on both Ebay and CL have,IMHO been been grossly over-priced with sellers asking $2,500-$3,500. Even in extremely good condition,I don't personally think any Spoiler is worth that much (unless of course it has Series electronics which I don't even know is possible given the depth of the body).
Of course as people in this forum have often stated, what a bass/guitar is worth, is really determined by how much a buyer values having that bass/guitar. As far as getting value for you money, however, unless you only want a thru-neck and aren't interested in a set-neck instrument, the Epic gives you a lot of bass for your $$$$. Even if you only want a thru-neck, I'd still suggest not focusing solely on a spoiler but also looking at Persuaders which ave been going for a bit more reasonable prices.
