Whats the history of Hyak?

My understanding is (from new contact Michael) is that luthier Rick Turner left Alembic sometime in in the mid-late '70s and along with Brian Smith started (?) Hyak. I recall around 1977 or so going to E.U. Wurlitzer's Music store in Boston looking to order an Alembic and was told by the manager that he stopped selling Alembics at that time due to a shakeup at the factory, which apparently this was the shakeup. It is interesting just how little information is available for the amazing guitars. I understand that there were only a couple hundred guitars and basses made...When I bought this particular bass (pictured above) it was around 1981-82. I bought this used along with the road case (which is long gone)and the DS-5 that went with it from a music store, now defunct called Steve's Quality Music in Danvers MA. One play and i was hooked. I've toured with it, recorded with it...all around awesome. Not my everyday player anymore. As I've gotten older I've gone to the old reliable Fender PBASS Special. I've also semi retired my Gibson EB3. BUT! We need to know more about these beauties.

Joe,
On this thread (http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=14994) there are some copies of original Hyak literature that I posted in 2007. Good luck with your sale!

Turner was not a co-founder of Hyak. That was something completely different.

The only bass I'd trade that Hyak away for would have to be an Alembic, Abe Rivera or..maybe a Modulus Quantam(neck thru). Regardless of blue book value..you'd be trading down otherwise.

Actually, I recommend getting over your bass fever that we all get..and not parting with such a gem.

Thanks for the kind advice T-Sustain. I appreciate it. I wholly agree with your view regarding trading it away...I've had it recently appraised by a well known auction house in Boston area, and auctioning it may be the route to go in the event I do decide to move it. Thanks again.

Your are welcome.
Thanks for the pics. That's one of the nicest basses I've seen on the net.
