2 Epics for one Elan?
-
....meaning, if the opp arose...would it be a fair trade?
-
Too many variables for a simple answer I think. You would need to consider the usual things such as age, condition, string count, woods used in construction, customisation, electronics packages of all instruments in the scenario.
As you probably know there are Standard models of both basses and the extra's and additional customisations that personalise basses and make simple comparisons difficult.
Do you have a particular trade in mind that you are looking into?

I have a friend who owns a music store (also the guitarist in one of my bands) that just took in the Elan.. zebrawood top, standard Elan electronics. The 2 Epics I own are standard builds as well. I bought them right. If the Elan plays and sounds as good I hope, I might be interested in trading the two Epics for the Elan

If you haven't tried an Elan before, be prepared for a very bright punchy sound with all that maple especially if it has new strings. I hope you like the bass and get a good deal on it.

Personally, I don't think it's the maple. I have an all maple Spector and that sounds incredible. I have an all maple Europa that sounds very thick and dark. And I have an all maple elan that's bright like the light of God.
So try it out. If you like it, get it. Or get it and upgrade the electronics, that doesn't cost much more than strings and you'll be sitting pretty.
One Elan looks waaaaayyyy better than an epic or essence or 2, in my opinion...
YES! GET IT!
Just my $.02

Not a good trade. You'd be losing an Alembic.

lol... to that's post...very true...
But, I went ahead and traded for it... looks stellar, plays super nice!
...satisfied ...thank you to you fellow Alembicans for your input and support `m/

You'll never regret it. Epics are great, but the Elan takes that next step. With time (3 years for me since SHE came into my life) you really can appreciate the subtle nuances of the filter/q switch setup. I love my Elan , and my favorite Alembic shape as well.

Congratulations- the Elan is my favorite shape.
