translates to a frowny face  )

For anyone who doesn't have an SF-2, I can't recommend them highly enough! They are truly the magic box that provides the missing ingredient to the sound you are trying to get. I use mine to mainly get more punch out of my rig, whether I'm using my full Eden stack or my Fender Rumble 350 combo. I can dial in the punch in any room with about an 1/8th turn of the frequency control on the low channel, then use the dampening ratio to either fatten up the bottom or get rid of boomy bottom in some rooms. Then I use the high channel to give me an edge on the highs in high pass mode, then flip the switch to low pass mode to get a really nice midrange tone when we play Journey songs that need that sound.

$630 is a great price for this amazing piece of equipment! They list for $1675 new & are very hard to find used.

+1 for what Rusty wrote.I've had mine for 21 years and won't leave home without it but fear not bassman.Another will find it's way to you again.I can sympathize with your situation as I recently was forced to sell one of my cabinets but I have faith that I can replace it in the future.

I actually traded away an SF-2 that was included in the sale when I got my doubleneck - did end up finding another one so it is possible!

I have used mine a lot for recording, but never got it worked into a live rig (though admittedly I haven't had much of a chance). Sometimes I visualize using it just for one low pass filter so that I can use it with non-Alembic basses.

I hope you work things out so that either you don't need to sell it or get another one later!

I Like my Alembic SF-2 coupled with  my old Alembic IN-2 . I currently like this combination directly to a power-amp and to the recording or FOH board or all simultaneously.   In my opinion a combinations of the two units would be a winner for all applications of studio and live applications .

Slawie, NO intentions to make you sad my friend but only voicing my opinion that a combination of the two would be a spectacular winner in all circles for future production in my opinion. I hope that all is well with you .

Rusty , I hope you are doing well . Thanks .  I am actually thinking of doing exactly as you suggested . I really do have a 40  or more year collection of gear that the folks here might enjoy . The problem is more stuff keeps showing up . My new to me Alembic 73-32 will be the first to show quite soon in a thread all her own . ( sorry  no  hi jack intended )

Wolf I'm doing great & hope that you are as well! I have had the pleasure of seeing some of your collection in person & I know that people would love to see pictures! Every time I see a picture of the Wall Of Sound I smile & think to myself I've seen one of those boxes in person!

I didn't know you were getting another Alembic?! What kind? With that serial number, will it look like Keavin's #12? I can't wait to see pictures!

Hey Wolf mate I don't feel sad about it - just Jonesing
The SF-2 and IN-2 would make a great combination.
Next time I am in the Bay area I am gong to look you up and see if we can meet and sonically collaborate.
I had the opportunity to make a bid on a IN-2 just recently (last year) but was beaten to the purchase.
Wait a minute that was you!

Sorry Slawie, I had to comply to the sellers conditions  as is and final and it was not cheap $$. I figured that I might have to do some repairs at some point.
I think I actually waited for you to make a  move on the unit as I remember and then during a  question phone call with the seller the deal materialized in all honesty.  Slawie , social sonic collaboration is welcome next time you are in my neck of the woods . I will buy you lunch as well !

I wonder how hard it would be to build an IN-2....

Edwin ,
I rebuilt one of mine . Serial # 24 . The sum of parts are not cheap in the original units. I had Acopian custom make me a part that was no longer available. Both of the IN-2's that I have seen have regulated power circuitry in design . You will also need high quality audio transformers for the passive balanced output interfacing,   The original ones were UTC. Lundahl can supply such replacements in design and quality.   You will spend $$$$ in parts total to match the original units in quality. Been there done that .  I think you can do it for your own private use,  but to build a comparable unit , the parts are all pricy . Alembic did not cut any corners on these .  Fitting it all in a one space unit rack mount enclosure was also part of the trick. I made it by 1/32nd  on the interior dimension on the rebuild. I had to make a thinner insulating stand off by 1/16 to do that . It was all fun and a labour of love in the long run.  It seems that many of my selected projects are such challenges. Refurbishment of  classic equipment  is a joy .

Slawie , I agree . That is why I would not show an opened picture of an IN-2 . I just repaired mine for my own personnal use . I would never build one to  Market it  and I would NOT accept any Alembic units for repair either.

Do you guys think running this SF-2 in-between an Epic and a Markbass Little Mark Tube 800 would be a fairly ideal setup?  I've taken to not using a lot of rack gear lately, but I still enjoy it!

I'm in the process of saving up for a Series instrument, but, as you can see from the picture, I love tone shaping!

No worries Slawie, with all this praising, I am trying to find a way to keep it. I was hit with a 1099 form a band after I filed my taxes....hoping I can figure out enough write offs to avoid paying more money to the gov. Hey has anyone here ever used a Meyer cp-10 equalizer? Can you cut and boost like an Sf-2 or is this apple and oranges.

Post by: sonicus on March 25, 2015, 09:15:48 AM
A Meyer CP-10 is a Parametric Equalizer. A parametric equalizer is  NOT the same as an Alembic SF-2 which is an ingenious piece of equipment that utilizes State Variable Filter principles adapted in the most musically pleasing format that I have encountered.  I also own Laboratory grade filters such as those made by Krohn-Hite  that cannot touch an Alembic SF-2 for live musical performance use. I have also had Pluto Filters   that were also adaptations of  State Variable Filters ! That was 30 years ago . The Alembic SF-2 Super Filter is here and now !

A Meyer CP-10 is  an excellent tool as well ,  As are many other available Parametric EQ's   RTA's and RTA programs. The Apples & Oranges view point can be applied here in comparison to what The Alembic SF-Super Filter does. When I have an SF-2 connected , I treat it as part of the instrument its self. That result becomes the sound that I desire in that moment.
You could also have a Parametric in the signal path as well doing a separate job with an RTA or RTA program. You can even set up a calibration microphone to do this and dial in the room .

I own and have used many different PARAMETRIC Eq's  NONE do exactly what the Alembic SF-2 Super Filter can offer a musician for live performance  use .

A stack of Meyer CP-10s were available on Ebay recently for $600 each. If I had some cash, I would have purchased one.

Sir Synapticgroove ____ In my opinion ;  An Alembic SF-2 would greatly enhance any combination of instruments and amplification equipment .

How is it insulting to the Wickershams to build something for yourself that's not commercially available? If anything, I would think it's an homage. All of these things are tools to make music, not sacred objects to render worship.

I can understand a problem if someone decides to try to manufacture it and sell it as an Alembic, that's a definite foul, but thinking about making one for myself shouldn't inspire negativity toward me.

Edwin , I can dig what you speak  my brother . I just do NOT want to step on a current prospective product re -release of Alembic Inc.  Alembic Inc , must prevail  with their original product  inovations to the music industry .After all Alembic was a game changer with their inovations .   My understanding is that  a new  IN-2  is still up and comming . All positive love and respect on my part .

Oh, I know all that. The reason I haven't ever gotten around to it is that I keep hoping that the reissue is just around the corner.

Boy, I remember those UTC transformers from back in the day. they were awfully nice.

Right back atcha! We gotta hang one of these years.

What I believe about myself, I would never inflect upon others.

I have led a bit of a personal campaign to get the IN-2 back into production.
