Title: Ebay Spoiler - $950 BIN!
Post by: bsee on February 15, 2005, 08:03:33 AM
There's a new listing for an '87 Spoiler on eBay.  Nice looking maple top and seems to be in good shape.  The Buy It Now price is a very reasonable $950.  Definitely worth looking into if you are in the market!

Thanks for the post bsee.   I have been keeping my eye out for a Spoiler for a while and snatched this one up without hesitation.   This is my first Spoiler, I was weened on Essence basses.   Any other Spoiler owners out there?   Let me know what you think and point me in the direction of some good threads here on the club.   Thanks to all!

Another question for any other Spoiler owners. Do standard (34) scale strings work or do I need to look into something different? Any thoughts on the topic would be appreciated. Thanks in advanve!

Standard-length strings, particularly DRs, always worked great on mine.

If you look at the bridges on some common basses, you will find that there's maybe an inch between where the string crosses the bridge and where the ball end is held.  The Alembic model tends to have more distance there, so longer scale strings seem to work fine.

On the downside, anything with a tapered or exposed core may not fit quite right.  I accidentally ended up with some tapered core strings, and they almost worked because the string was just reaching the full winding as it crossed the bridge.  It was within an eight inch of working for me.

Regular D'Addario long scales are fine for a 32 Spoiler.

When I tried the same type of string on a 34 Epic, the A string was too short to reach the tuner post. Does anyone know if that's a known issue with D'Addario, or just an incident? Most shops do not stock extra long scale.

Never had a problem like that with DR or TI long scales, and judging by the length of string I had to cut off on regular DRs, they will probably fit a 35 scale without a problem.
