Been watching it.  Any idea what kinds of taxes and/or duties we're looking at if someone in the United States buys it and has it shipped here?

I would think that you wouldn't have to pay import duties to bring back something that was made in the US.  Maybe that's naive, but it would be my hope anyway.

I have purchased items directly from England before, and I paid nothing for import duties of any kind.  My company is sending me to India in a couple of months, and I am considering laying over in England for a week of vacation.  Semi-free vacation!  I am seriously considering this bass.  If I buy it, I'll just fly it home, no muss, no fuss.  Since the bass has sit under Teri's bed for years and years and years, a couple more months wouldn't hurt, I'm sure.
 
Note:  Items purchased were eBay auctions of musical items.  Just wanted to clarify that point.

I've had two experiences importing musical instruments, both saxophones.  Both are valuable to collectors of vintage instruments (Martin Magna low A bari from Australia, Selmer Mk IV low A alto from Japan).  Both were declared as used saxophones worth a few hundred dollars.  Neither was insured (because of past experience with UPS stiffing me on damage obviously their fault).  Never heard a word about import duties for either.  Your mileage, of course, may vary.

I live in the USA. I bought a Ken Smith (made in USA) bass in Germany once, and I didn't have to pay any duty because the bass was made in here, and was returning to its country of manufacture.  Unless  the rules have changed in the past few years, Alembic buyers in the US don't have to pay duty on Alembics purchased overseas.

I am happy to report that the bass arrived last week and was not subject to any duties, etc.  I am also happy to report that the sound of the instrument is magnificent (I was time-tripping back to the 70s the moment I fired it up; or was it a flashback?).  In my spare time, I plan to start a thread on zebrawood (why isn't any in the wood bank; can anything else sound like it?)  Thanks again to poor_nigel for his help on this one.
