Hey,
Was anyone following that auction w/o bidders at $3095? Was there anything wrong or misrepresented?
I want a short scale SC but not sure of market value.
-
The bass has been relisted. It looks to be a very nice SC in very good condition. I haven't watched these closely enough to have a good idea of value. Bob S keeps up with a lot of Alembic stuff on Ebay, so if he's been watching the SC's he may have a good idea of a trading range. Also, Nic has tracked some SC trades and may have a value range you can use as well. So if one of those guys notices this thread, they should be able to give you something you can work with.
Also, check out the used basses at Bass Central (http://www.basscentral.com/alembicbass/used.shtml). They're showing two used SC's that have been sold. One was listed at $3,000; and the other at $4,000.

Thanks Dave,
I'm just trying to evaluate whether the market is soft or timing not right. I'm sure it's worth $3100, but as they say 'it's only worth what someone is willing to pay'.

There is always a fluctuation in the number of sellers and the number of buyers at any given time. That's why items such as F-1X's, that trade fairly often, can still have a wide range of closing prices. On the instruments that don't trade as often, such as SC's, the fluctuation will be even greater. Some weeks there may be very few people checking Ebay for an SC; other weeks there may be anxious buyers willing to bid the price past what might be considered the upper range.
If you think it's worth $3,100 and you really want an SC like this one, then you may want to go for it (given of couse you are comfortable with Ebay to begin with and have taken all the necessary precautions).
Note; the listing doesn't say anything about a case.

When I was looking for my BB earlier this year Bass Central also had a used one with Anniversary electronics and no LED's with asking price around $3600. Not sure what final sales price was.

I think that's high for that bass.
I figure 2000- 2500 range for that one.
It may need an electronics u/g as well.
I just paid 3000 shipped for mine, but it was very customized.( ref. Dec. 2001 Custom archive http://www.alembic.com/info/FC_duo.html (http://www.alembic.com/info/FC_duo.html) )

Well, the only SC Sig Deluxe I have in the sold database went for $3298.81 (actually a UK sale, for 1800 quid) via a Buy it Now. This was after it had failed to attract a bid that that price for about 10 days. Nothing unusual about it; a basic Deluxe version, w/Signature electronics and no extra bells or whistles.
I have another one in the db that didn't sell for it's opening bid of $5500, and which was withdrawn because of an error in the listing before the auction ended (and the seller has subsequently left eBay). This one had a stinger omega upgrade.
I have three in the overall database that are for sale through Bass Central. These are new basses, being sold for about 25% under retail. Two are selling for $6980 and one for $7675. (Note that Bass central has more than three available; those are the only ones I could discern the serial numbers for).
Now, there was also a SC Sig Standard that sold on eBay back in January, that went for $3500.
So that's what pricing info I have. Based on that very meager info, I'd say that the $3095 deal could very well sell on eBay for that or a bit higher. But I tend to agree with yggdrasil's viewpoint, especially if it turns out that the bass needs an electronics upgrade.

He then relisted at an opening bid of $4800, but it didn't sell.
That's the one I bought after the auction expired.

Since I'm forgetting things quite often, please correct me if I'm wrong; but isn't it the case that the only upgrade signature electronics might need is on those basses where, when moving the pan control from one extreme to the other, the volume doesn't maintain an even level. And isn't the fix something that can be sent by mail to the owner at relatively low expense?

Ah, that's what happened to it. Cool, and congrats! I _thought_ it looked familiar (from the FC archive), but was too lazy to go back and try to find it. $3k shipped for that is a fine price.
Ah, found it in my database. Didn't that one actually turn out to be a Sig Standard? (01C126xx) Or did I misread a listing or the thread where it was discussed?
:-)

According to the Alembic Archive( http://www.alembic.com/info/FC_duo.html (http://www.alembic.com/info/FC_duo.html) ), it's a sig deluxe, although it has a Custom ser. #.
You do recollect correctly - the seller was really mixed up, variously calling it a Series, a standard, a deluxe - after I corresponded with him often enough,I realized it was lack of knowledge, not deception.

Thanks all! You've been a great help.

I'll change my db entry to Custon SC Sig. Deluxe, then. Thanks!

Hey guys,
I used to own that bass. I traded it for a customized MK Deluxe 5. The Clarke bass is incredible. It whispers as well as barks when called upon. I've never played one quite the same and I would even buy it back if I had the money right now. It is a beautiful piece, chambered body, rosewood top and back, a gorgeous volute- the longest I've seen on any Alembic, the electronics seemed perfectly fine. For a Sig. Deluxe, it sounded more like a Series One than any other non Series One I've ever played- especially with steel roundwound strings. There are more pictures of it at www.hilgraves.com/bryant (http://www.hilgraves.com/bryant) . You can hear it on the first two jazz audio samples.
