Title: Need advice for an extension cabinet

Hello Friends ,  
 
For small to medium-size gigs , i use a Markbass combo 102 p . I was wondering which combination would be the best as a cabinet extension for my combo : another 2 x 10 or 1 x 15 ?

It will depend on what are you missing in your Tone...
 
This Combo seems to have a large frequency response spectrum (they say 40Hz~18KHz!), if it is realy flat on all that, you don't need a extention cab to fullfill its response just to move impedance down to 4 Ohm.
 
The question is: Do you need more bottom end? Or do you need to define your mids?

An other thought occured me...
 
Large cone speakers need more Power to move, so as low frequencies need it to get perceived more clearly. But adding an external cab will just gives you 100W of extra power (it has 300W on original 8 Ohm/built-in speaker and goes to 400W on 4 Ohm/2 Cabs configuration). So, summing a 1x15 may not not have a huge impact on your sound in terms of loudness.
 
It will add more bottom end, for shure, but I'm not that shure if it will gives you lots of extra volume. You can sense this hearing 2 amps with different Cabs. The same 200W head usualy seems louder matched with a 4x10 than with a 2x15. Just because we actually discern Mids better than Lows.
 
So, if your goal is to get louder, I suggest you to buy the 2x10. If you aim fatter tone, get the 1x15...

In my experience, as lows are more omnidirectional they spread all around while highs are better heard just in front of a PA, I've never really wanted more bottom at Stage. My problem usualy is to get more defined Mids to move me away from mud.
 
If you experience something like that, you should get the 10 Cabs...

Since the speakers are running full range I would go with a 2X10 extension cabinet. This will let the amp run at 500W and give you slightly more speaker surface area than a single 15.

As mentioned earlier in this thread do not run your loading impedance lower then your guide (manual for the amp head/combo suggested). I really have to say that a  2X10 cabinet is a very useful tool and very versatile . I like 10 inch speakers because they are great to bring out the staccato articulation in your playing. 1 have an 8x10 , 4x10, and 2x10 in my arsenal; But then I also suffer from serious GAS or  GEAR ACQUISITION SYNDROME  !

I would sometimes need a bit more volume . I tested my combo alone on a big stage ( needless to say there were tilt back monitors in front of me as well ) and i had to push it at 8/10 of its max power , what i really don't like...so an extension cabinet would have made it without any doubt !  
 
...on the other hand , for big stages , i usually play on my Aguilar rig : db-680 + db-728...and believe me : never played at more than 3/10 of its power ...this thing is immensely powerful...and heavy too !!! ;-)
 
So , an extension cabinet 2 x 10 would be the best combination following your advices !  
 
I'll start thinking opening my wallet very soon... :-)))))))))))

I have a Markbass 210 combo, and I have a Markbass 210 extension cab. Lightweght, and sounds great. Imho......

Alain, since you know about the Aguilar company, why don't you try a GS 112. I have been using one for live performance for a while and love it. It really adds alot with the 4/10 cab.(http://club.alembic.com/Images/393/72051.jpg)

...i checked on the Markbass website for some 2 x 10 cabs ...and i found 2 differents ones . The first one is called  standard  and has HF horn , the second one is from the  traveller  series , a bit smaller in size . Which one is the best ?

It is the GS 112. I mentioned it as an alternative to a 15 in speaker. Alain, if you are still monitoring this thread, I have found this speaker gives me more than I got from a Bag End 115 SD. It has an attenuator, and weighs less than half than any 15 I've owned. On larger gigs I elevate it and it is pounding out funk on a large scale. It is the first speaker that has fulfilled all my requirements. Weight, tone, volume,attenuation, size,multi-jacks for input.

I been using a Ampeg SVT12HE as my gigging cab and if I need a extra cab for larger gigs I take along a 2/10 cab. These 12 cab are great for getting the job done without the added weight.
