Not sure I've seen one of these before (http://cgi.ebay.com/Early-Alembic-custom-made-body-only-Les-Paul-Special_W0QQitemZ7413831032QQcategoryZ2384QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Seems dodgy especially as its a bolt on neck.

Could this have possibly been a neck-thru at some point? - hard to tell. To many things about this one do not add up to be an Alembic - but, if so, I would have loved to have seen this one in original form.

Well, it's an Alembic bridge; and they did start making that style in '77. And the tailpiece looks like something Alembic might do on a custom order. My guess would be that if it were made at Alembic, it was made as an employee side project. But that's just a guess. He says he still has the neck; if it's an Alembic, there should be a serial number stamped in the headstock. He says the guitar was made for him, but he doesn't say anything about replacing the original pickups. And the only thing he says about the electronics is that the toggles were removed. His story isn't convincing.

He does say in his text that the neck was cut off and another one was bolted on. I suspect it was a neck through at one point. It also appears he still has the old cut off neck. In any event it sure looks like it's been abused.

no way this was a neck-thru at one point..the way the heel in the back is cut and not carved, the inside of the neck cavity itself..the back of the guitar being a solid piece..this was born as a bolt-on.
Alembic employee side-project? maybe.

There also doesn't appear to be a battery compartment, so perhaps this never had Alembic guts in the first place.
