I plan on bidding on this bass unless someone else here is going to. I won't bid against a club member. Just let me know if you are and I won't bid.

so when is enough really enough? apparently, never. great score, Olie.

I think you need to check the Mesquite zoning regs, you may have surpassed the Alembics per capita ratio.

Michael, I sure hope not. Wait till my wife finds out how much SHE spent on me for fathers day. LOL.
This will probably put my custom order on hold for year or so.
Pslams 37:4

PS. Michael, we need to hook up and trade chops sometime.

Olie:

Congrats!  Very classy looking bass.  I suspect I'm not to only one looking forward to some detailed pics in Showcase.  Now take a few deep breathes.  As Tom Petty stated: The waiting is the hardest part.  Play it in good health and good luck explaining this to senior management.  LOL

Thanks Bill. Beleive it or not she'll probably never even notice the new bass. SHe says they all look a like to her. (hmmm does that make her a basscist
Now I'm going to reveal my ignorance, can the Series be played without the power supply? I assume it can be used with batteries too.

Olie - Yes the series instruments can be played with batteries.  But, they won't last very long. You need to keep a look out for a power supply.

Once you use the series bass, you will be ruined for life.

This has the power supply and 21' cable with it. We somtime play at differant churchs and they have their own rig.
Is the DS-5 a rack mount power supply?

Olie:

My understanding is that the difference between Series I and II is the Q switch.  Series I has a 3 position toggle, while Series II has a rotary pot that is continuously variable.  Otherwise they are the same.  (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong about this).   So the relevant issues when it comes to using batteries are:

1.  Is the 1/4 jack wired in mono or stereo?  The older ones are wired stereo, so if you plug in a mono cord you get neck pickup only.  The newer ones are wired mono - a regular cord works fine.  I'm not sure when the change was made but I think it was late 80's or early 90's.  I've heard of people getting a stereo/mono switch installed as a mod.  Also, it is apparently not too difficult to rewire a stereo jack as a mono.  Here is a link to Mica's posting on the subject.  Notice this states the change was made in 1988, so your's is likely already wired for mono.

And then, of course;

2.  Battery life issues, the main one being whether or not it has LEDs as these really suck a battery.

The DS-5 is the old little box.  The rack mount unit  (the one curently offered by Alembic) is the DS-5R.  I'm looking for a DS-5.  If your's comes with the DS-5 box and you want the rack mount unit maybe we can work a trade?

If the 1/4 jack happens to be stereo, can you solder a stero male plug on one end of a cable and sloder a jumper between the tip and sleeve connections in the stereo jack so you could use it on any amp and get both p/u's?

DUH! Guess I should have read the link to Micas post first. Looks like my diagram will work but I need to use a 20K resistir between each terminal, tip and ring. Like this?

LOL, amen, brother. Although, I'm pretty sure the only Alembic I'd ever get for Father's Day would be on a mug.
I'd like to get together before the Summer runs out, that Series II Mesquite's not that far away. I'll check my calendar and write you off-line.

Ollie,
Congrats on the SII. I'm a new member but have followed this site for some time. I was seriously considering this bass and got cold feet, mostly because of my concerns over the weight. My old worn-out shoulder has cost me too much money at the chiropractor, so I think I'll look for a lighter instrument like my Essence. I have been in touch with the owner and I believe he is also a club member. He was very helpful to me. FYI, I have posted a serial number history request already so you can check that out when it's done. I'm SOOOOO jealous!

fmm, too funny.

Olie, how many times have you seen/heard an sports annoucer say something akin to he's got the surest hands in the league, only to watch the player fumble the ball away the very next play? I jinxed them. It's rare that I make any definitive statement about sporting teams, should have kept my hopeful mouth shut. At least the Mavs can win it at home. Oops, did I do it again?

For those of us who play string bass:
Psalms 49:14
Psalms 111:1
Psalms 112:2

and my personal favorite
Psalms 2:7

If you have a NLV translation these scriptures may not make sense here.
Check out a King James or American STD to keep things on the up and upright

hey, not fair. i refuse to be maligned just becasue it would be thousands of years later before man could harness electricity. ;)

Proverbs 11:3
Ecclesiastes 12:10

Olie, going out on a limb? (it's a stretch, but pun intended, keeping with the biblical theme. anyone get it?)

Olie:

My attendance at houses of worship is limited to weddings, funerals, and bar mitzvahs.  Oh yea, ballgames too.  I have season tickets at the Coliseum.  Go A's!  (Hey didn't we just take over 1st place from Texas yesterday?)  Sorry to rub it in, but what else can I do?  Talk about the Warriors????!!!!!!  Truthfully, I am rooting for the Mavs, mostly because of Avery Johnson (a real class act when he was on Oakland) and Mark Cuban (a real maverick owner, both figuratively and literally!), and in spite of Erick Dumbpier.

I wonder how many Bibles got the dust knocked off them just to find out what we're talking about.
That being said, (hmm hmm), I am a man of integrity and the words which I sought are acceptable though I don't play an upright any more.

Bill;
I've actually played at a bar (bat) mitzvah parties. They were fun too, (all the Gefilte Fish and Mogan David we could eat and drink).
You're right, Avery Johnson is a class act. And Mark Cuban is the sports team owner that Jerry Jones wished he were.
Ah yes the Rangers, they will never learn. You can't build a team on one good pitcher!

Okay, I can't wait and since I have another tendon wrenching physical therapy session in about an hour for a messed up pinky (yeah, pinky, what of it, it still hurts, whaa whaa whaaaaa)
here it is: Olie's game five prediction = olie + out on a limb = olive + branch = peace = psalms.
Okay that's enough preaching from the peanut gallery. Have a great weekend and hopefully the Rangers and the Mavs will be back on top when Monday gets here, ya'll take care.

congrats, olie. that is the most beautiful 5 i've seen in a long time. sorry about your mavs. i rooted for them despite the rest of town. in fact, i lost money on them w/a friend on a bet. i took the mavs and he took the heat, and the worst part is we cut the bet after the first two games. man, did i eat humble pie! but your bass is absolutely gorgeous and i can only imagine the sound. good things come to those who wait.

Thanks Patrick, it looks even better in person.
I got to play the Bass all wwekend and it does sound great. I restrung and lowered the action and it plays like a dream.
JIm: your concerns about wieght were right on. This is one heavy bass but I don't play those 5 hour nights anymore so it's not really a factor.
I'll do some recording with it this week and try to get some samples on my web site. I'll post some links here if I get it done

Thanks J o e y.
This Series II has the stereo 1/4 plug on it. I can plug a pair headphones stright into the bass and it really sounds great. Plenty of volume and an unadulterated sound of the Bass.
Has anyone else here tried this? Other than draining the batteries I don't think this can harm anything if I am wtong please let me know.

Well Olie it isn't a series 2 but I just bought another Essence. Hope you are enjoying your new axe. I admit I still have a little bit of buyers remorse for not picking up the series 2 but I know that the Essence fits me like a glove. Here is the link to my new baby.
