Also says preamp.

interesting electronics setup. no hum canceller? i'd almost go for tht but the opening bid is a little high imho. if i didn't already own a spyder i'd consider doing something pretty foolish ;-)
-
Looking at the shot of the back it looks like a square upper plate for series electronics but it only has 2 screw holes in the plate instead of 4. If those 2 screws are for gain then I would assume that it's series electronics with no hum canceler since the 2 missing screws in the backplate would have been for adjusting the phase of each pickup in relation to the hum canceler. No hum canceler, then no need for those 2 screws.
I don't think that I've ever seen a series electronics setup with no hum canceler though. I can't imagine why a person would not want to have the hum canceler.

Perhaps they are AXY humcancelling pickups, and they are paired with the Series preamp, which is of higher quality than the regular preamps? Then you wouldn't need the trimpots for adding the humcanceller signal to the single coil signal.
-
Sometime within the last year or so, there was a post of a picture of a series instrument with no hum canceller. If I recall correctly, Mica posted at the time that there had indeed been a very few series instruments that were made with no hum canceller.
-
I can't tell from the photos, but it almost looks like it could be SII electronics. There appears to be a master volume, and I can't tell if the Q switches are switches or small knobs from these photos. Anyone else have an opinion?
-
After supersizing the 2 body-front closeups, it seems pretty clear on my screen that they're knobs. I seem to recall seeing a post where Mica said older Alembics had the HX inside the body instead of surface-mounted, and that they would still that if you wanted - maybe that's the case here?

If there was a separate humcanceller, then you would expect to see four holes for the trim pots in the backplate, not just two.
The older Alembics with hidden humcancellers were built in the early years - check out the Showcase section, for Series instruments with serial numbers below 500 - IIRC, there are one or two of those listed.
-
i dunno but i'm feeling the itch for another exploiter...
-
this bass is pretty much like mine electronically seriesII electronics with a hidden hum canceller(http://club.alembic.com/Images/395/33457.jpg)

Is that a cell phone with a built in vintage alembic?

It's so he can practice playing along with his favorite ring tones.

actually it's a calculator,it's covering up my social security number.

Very slick keavin. You had me there for a moment. I was going ask if you installed a new kind of wireless gizmo under the hood :-),

Without the hum balance controls on the backplate, my guess is that this is Series electronics with AXY pickups. I know there's at least 5 of them out there with that arrangement.
-
That's a pretty cool idea Keavin. One more way to beat the thief.

Good idea Keavin. I think I might just add my SS# to my bass tonight.

what's good about that is if it is ever lost or stolen your personal info is ENGRAVED into the inside of your guitar (phone number/contact info etc...)& only you and the police will know this.
-
I'm thinking that the control cavity might be a little cramped so I think I'm going to put it right under one of the pickups. That's a nice flat easy to get to part of the bass and I don't have to worry about bumping any of the internal wiring.

I seem to remember Mica saying this setup is known as the Series I.5 aka Series with a hidden humcanceller.
I also remember her saying they can't do it as an option any more, which suits me just fine. The more bits on show, the happier I am!!
My dream bass would have the Series II with a treble cut/boost and bass cut/boost knobs for each pickup, Laser LEDS with knob dimmer, and red+green side LEDS.
With an on/off knob.

Ah, just spotted Mica's post above!
Did look weird with 2 holes in that square plate!
Good news is with my new job, I should be in the market for my 1st Alembic in the next 6 months!!

looks like this one got away. good thing - i'm fixin' to buy a house and i really should hang onto my cash.
still it was a cool bass - almost the holy grail for me (long scale 4-string exploiter w/ series II electronics)
-
Not so fast. Unless I'm missing something, it closed with no bids.
I contacted the seller early on and told him I thought that he was more than $2K too high. He said he had an offer at $5500 and would hold on to the bass if he couldn't get what he wanted.

sure glad this one ended. it was calling my name but it was way over priced and i'm getting ready to buy a house. elsewise i mighta gone for it (had it been listed at say...$4k :-) ).
be interesting to see if it gets relisted. the seller has a pretty good rep and used alembic prices are going up but he's smoking crack if he thinks he's gonna get $6500 for that bass.

Well, it's back again. Look closely at the F2B, it is a real early one. It is fitted with the front lamp instead of the LED. The LED started at serial number 144.
